My dd's tidy their own rooms (of a fashion, although its not perfect) when they have finished playing. They are 8 and nearly 5. We have had this rule for a while now.

I give the rooms a good clean and tidy once a week.

mine make attempts, they are 2, 4 & 7. they have all been involved in tidying up toys from the start The younger two are naturally tidy and always put things away because they prefer things to be where they belong when they have finished with them; DS1 is an untidy creature but makes huge efforts to sort his room (when he cant see the carpet any more and knows he will fall over something if he gets up to wee in the night)

Ds has to put things away when he's finished with them, pick his magazines up and put dirty washing in the linen basket.I clean the room .He's 8.

We both do. DD is nearly 6yo. When she has been playing she wil do the todying away, but I do go up and do the last bits so the room is properly tidy, rather than things just put away.

DS (4) is better at putting things back after himself than DD (9). He's well trained at nursery I think.

Rules are they need to tidy toys away, plates by the sink, dirty clothes in washing baskets then room tidied (I give DS a helping hand as his room isn't very organised atm. When he gets his new room he'll be 5 and I will expect him to keep that tidy (will make sure he has lots of storage and a place for everything to make it easier)

I am trying to get DD to get into the habit of tidying her room every evening for a few minutes rather than it getting bad and seeming too much to do in one go. I help her when I feel she needs a bit of help.

DiscoDizzy · 10/02/2008 11:02

DD's 2 and 4 both help. I will do it but if they've made a real mess they're quite good at having a tidy up.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2008 11:07

Mine love dusting and I sometimes get them to clean the floorboards.
Not in an Annie way, they actually enjoy it.

LoveMyGirls · 10/02/2008 11:08

dd1 is 8 and keeps her bedroom tidy and wipes the surfaces down with baby wipes though we have to collect cups from up there because she always forgets. I go and give her room a proper sort out, throw out rubbish and take out toys she is too big for about every 6months usually to make space for birthday and christmas presents. I also strip her bed when it needs it and dp re-makes it.

Dd2 is 2 and I do everything in her room but she will do more as she gets older and she has already started helping tidy up the toys downstairs at the end of each day.

Nemoandthefishes · 10/02/2008 11:10

DS is 4 and I help him do his room

DDs room I tend to do although if dd1 is around I will ask her to help.

Tidying toys downstairs involves everyone who is around..

Mine are 6 and 8, they don't get their pocket money on a Saturday until they have tidied their rooms.
Then ds2, 19m, goes in and trashes them again!

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 10/02/2008 11:14

My two older children are 11 and 8. For a few years now we've had a rule that they earn their pocketmoney. We had a chart with a list of 'jobs', things like; doing homework, guitar practise, tidying room etc. I do have to keep on top of them, because they try and get away with doing the bare minimum!
