two month old hand foot and mouth really need help

Is it very dangerous for a two month old? Everything I read is about toddlers getting it. Dd has stopped drinking because of blisters in mouth. I’ve not slept all night as she won’t sleep as she won’t eat. Waiting for a call back from doctors after the first doctor said to wait it out… she’s not eating?! She needs something for the mouth surely? Im so fed up

When was the last time she took milk?
111 or a&e if it's been a while.
Is she having wet nappies?

hfam · 23/02/2023 11:11

@Lijay 5:30am she had a full feed, struggling again now to get her to drink anything. Is this too long?

Don't trust 111 on this they are not medically trained and their algorithm doesn't always have the capability to differentiate between a 2yr old and a 2 month old.
Phone your own doctor and insist your baby is seen as a matter of urgency, failing this go straight to A&E.
A baby that young not drinking can have serious consequences.

I'd just go to A&E, usually they have a separate children's one which has paediatric practitioners who will have more experience likely than the GP. Like PP said, you don't want to mess around with small babies and possible dehydration.

hfam · 23/02/2023 11:16

@maryberryslayers im panicking now, last feed at 5:30am was 200ml. She’s just had 50ml just now and stopped again.

@maryberryslayers did I already leave it too late from 5:30am to now?

@Monstermoomin thanks, we were in a and e a week ago about brown sick and spent 7 hours waiting to be told they didn’t know why and to just monitor it so I’m reluctant to go again unless vital… urgh so stressed

Sorry to hear that. If she's got blisters in her mouth it is going to be painful to suck, you basically need to be looking out for signs of dehydration, so very few wet nappies, which might be strong and concentrated urine, sunken fontanelle, no tears when crying, having less than half their usual feeds, being drowsy etc.

There's lots of info on NHS website about dehydration in babies. I was just at A&E with my 6mo the other day and then we're talking about the above in relation to dehydration.

See if you can get some calpol down her for the pain in her mouth, but if she continues to really refuse feeds over the next couple of hours I'd go to A&E.

Don't feel bad about going in again. If in doubt go in Flowers

hfam · 23/02/2023 11:30

@Monstermoomin I did notice the sunken thing you mention but it’s fine now. At the time I didn’t link it to dehydration. I feel terrible.

she’s missed 4 feeds (not consecutively) in the last two days. She had a full feed at 5:30am today and has just this second finished another full feed but usually she’d have one sooner than 6 hours. Could this still make her dehydrated or is it looking ok if she’s had another full feed again now?

It's hard to say as every baby is different (and I'm not medically trained) but you know your baby and when she isn't herself. Keep an eye on wet nappies and her feeds, as it's probably not great if it's going on for a while with her being so young and is always best to get checked.

HFM is horrible, my eldest had it at the end of last year but she is 3.5yo and didn't get it in her mouth, it still made her go off food and drink as she was not herself

Monstermoomin · 23/02/2023 15:15

How are you getting on @hfam?

HelloRose · 23/02/2023 17:54

It's quite unusual for a 2mo to get it. Are you sure it's HFM? Is she very unsettled / crying?
I'd definitely get a second opinion from GP.
