5 year old frequently sick

Desperate for any ideas/advice. 5yo DS vomits pretty frequently. It started just over a year ago, before that he'd only ever been sick a couple of times properly since a baby. Last December he vomited once every couple of days for 5 weeks. GP did bloods, urine, stool sample - all fine. Eased off over summer/autumn but has increased again this winter and in the last 2 weeks he's been sick 4 times.

Saw a paediatrician in September for poor weight gain, who tested for lots of different allergies, coeliac, and did faecal calprotectin test - all came back fine and saw dietitian who recommended some dietary changes to boost protein and calories. Seems to have worked and he's gaining weight. But still the vomiting continues. GP has previously mentioned Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome but then why would it ease off in summer/autumn then come back? Last year in the worst patch it used to keep happening at 4am every time but now the times are random. Do other children randomly vomit this frequently?! Do we just accept it?! It just seems so much more frequent than friends' kids. I could take him back to the GP but I'm not sure what there is left to explore. Possibly reflux?! Any ideas??

If there’s recognisable food in the vomit eaten a while ago, look at gastropareisis

Bizarrely my DS used to randomly vomit and the GP diagnosed it as overexcitable vomiting ie he'd get overexcited and vomit he was 8/9

It was annoying because despite him not being ill I'd still have to pick him up from from school each time as that was the policy

@Sundayrain I completely sympathise with you. My 5 year old has also been experiencing this. It started 2/3 months ago usually at around 3am. The next day she would be absolutely fine. This then increased to just after she went to sleep. Then a couple of times at around 7pm.

Has your son ever had a urine sample tested when this has occured? Last week DD vomited at around 7pm and the next morning GP tested urine and came back with infection. Antibiotics for 5 days, within 2 days of finishing started vomiting alot and infection hasnt cleared. Not had any more since been back on antibiotics.

Just curious if its possibly been caused by this all along for DD. I hope its stops soon for your son!

@Sundayrain oops just reread and he has had urine tested before. Sorry Sunday!

My son had similar a few years of ago (he's 14 now so was between 10-11).

Both myself/Google and paediatrician decided it was abdominal migraines. His seemed to be triggered by certain foods (one of his favourites, unfortunately) but not if we bought from one particular shop. He often got a v sore stomach immediately before the vomiting.

Thanks all. @NeverTalksToStrangers2 the GP now suspects it is abdominal migraine, has referred to paediatrician. We've not been able to identify any triggers for the episodes which is frustrating. Hopefully the paediatrician will have some ideas.

I was pretty sure reading your post that is what it was.

My son actually missed his first morning of secondary school (sept 2020) because he woke up vomiting. I rang the school and explained "this keeps happening, I'm certain it's not contagious and it's not covid, can he please start in the afternoon if he's feeling better?". He eventually just grew out of it.

I have this as an adult
No apparent cause 🤷🏻‍♀️
