How many days at preschool at 4?

Hi all my son does 3 days at the moment at preschool (9-2.30) and was contemplating adding a 4th as he is due to start school September

He doesn’t particularly like going in (cries) but the ladies say it doesn’t take him long to settle, play and have a good day

Do you think it could benefit him going an extra day in prep for September or keep it at 3 while I have him not at school!

How many days do your 4 years do?

He turned 4 in Jan so only just 4

Thanks x

Dts did three half days, turned four on 20th august and started school full time in the September. They don't need to go to preschool

I know they don't "need to" but im asking, what other people with the same age children done.

He has learned so much at preschool and I believe they have and are prepping him good for school

Mine did 2 full days at private nursery then went to school full time at just turned 4. Lots of children go to school the month after they turn 4 and the majority are fine doing 5 school days. I'd say it's more a case of what you want him to do. I wanted to spend my day off with my son, and my parents wanted him the other 2 days. He transitioned from 2 long days at nursery to 5 short school days no problem.

DD1 did 2 days 9-3 and 1 day 12-3. It was a good balance for her.

Enjoy the last bit of freedom from the schedule while you can... they have 14 years of school.

My eldest and my youngest will be, doing mornings 5 days a week as it's in a school. I found it helped get him into going daily ready for school.

Meandfour · 22/02/2023 16:03

DS is 3 but starts school in September. He does 15 hours; 8.30-11.30, 5 days a week.

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/02/2023 16:03

Mine did 5 full days but at school nursery so 9-3, term time only. She loved it and really thrived on the consistent routine, plus she got all of the specialist stuff that way too e.g. music, french, sports, ballet since they were spread throughout the week.

jannier · 22/02/2023 16:11

Enjoy the time while you can he will be at school soon enough

Whitewolf2 · 22/02/2023 16:14

My first did 4 half days, home after lunch, my second 3 full days (until 5pm). They both settled into school really well.

APurpleSquirrel · 22/02/2023 16:19

DD did 4 full days at a private nursery & loved it, but she was Sept born so had a whole extra year before starting school.
DS (June born) we started with 2 full days at preschool from Sept-Dec; & increased it to 3 in Jan till her left in July. That seemed ok for him.

FunkyMonks · 22/02/2023 16:19

My DD started nursery at the school when she was 3 soon as she was there I had her attend wrap around so she goes full days mon-thurs 9-3.30am and just nursery in the mornings on Friday as she will soon be 4 and this sept will then be full time School so I wanted to get her use to being in school full days to prepare her but most importantly the social skills she needed after so many lockdowns I wanted her to be able to be with children her own age and be able to have all the fun learning and activities.

My daughter did three full days at first (I work 3 days) but after a couple of terms asked to go more so 5 full days it is now. However she has just turned 4 and is more than ready for reception others in her age group aren't. You know your child they will let you know when they're ready. Mine just clearly prefers her friends to me!

hiredandsqueak · 22/02/2023 16:53

Dgs is 4 in June and starts school in September he has been doing five days 8.30 until 3 at pre school since September as his dm works. He loves it though and goes happily.

Mine is 4 in May and does 9-12 5 days a week and loves it.

I may stick to 3 days until maybe after Easter then reassess. He is my last and maybe I should make the most of him being home while I can xx

My five year old reception class child did three full days (9-3) in preschool from age 3 onwards. She coped with the transition to primary school absolutely fine. My just turned 3 year old does two full days (8.30-3) and one half day (12-3) at preschool, I will increase it to 3 full days in September

CoodleMoodle · 22/02/2023 19:20

At 4 DD was doing 3 half days and 1 full day (15hrs total). At 4 DS was doing 3 half days and 2 full days (18hrs, 3hrs paid for). He's a Summer born so I wanted him to do as many full days as possible in the lead up to September. They both loved it, though.

turnthebiglightoff · 22/02/2023 19:32

My DS will be 4 at Easter. He does 3 days now and will do 4 after Easter. I think it will help him get ready for 5 days come September.

MajorCarolDanvers · 22/02/2023 19:32

Mine did 4 full days per week

ZebraKid71 · 22/02/2023 19:42

Depends on the child and what is right for them. my eldest did 3.5 school days, so 9-3 for 3 days and 9-12 on one day. wouldn't have coped with anymore but my middle child is now in pre school going 5 days a week (9-3), is absolutely thriving and loving it. We started off with 3.5 days but they were upset on the day they didn't go when we dropped the eldest off so we upped it and haven't looked back. They do seem to get tired towards the end of term sometimes so then we just don't send them in on Fridays. Both summer born so middle one is still 3.

Cliffordthebigreddog · 22/02/2023 19:47

My daughter turned 4 this week and has done 3 days (9-3) since September. I did up it to 4 for a few weeks in January but she got really tired and ratty on that 4th day and I realised she’s best with 3 days for now.

AIU · 22/02/2023 19:54

I work in a nursery and more days is always better as means children build stronger friendships especially at that age. I would say 4 days is perfect.

Miriam101 · 22/02/2023 20:47

DD did five days mornings only the year before Reception which was perfect, and I'm hoping DS will do the same. Gets them into the swing of going somewhere Mon-Fri without being too knackering.

ToddlerMumma · 22/02/2023 20:50

My 2 did full time nursery 8am-5pm from the age of 1! We both work full time and have no family support. They have thrived and the eldest was more than ready for school (with breakfast & after school club)

Seaglass87 · 22/02/2023 20:52

I think 4 days would be good purely to get him used to being there more and longer days so the 5 full days isn't as big of a shock.
My daughter goes to school in September and she goes 3 days and 2 mornings (we increased it from 3 a couple of weeks ago)
