7mo wants to sleep on his tummy

DS turned 7mo last week. He CAN roll but seems to have forgotten how to roll from his belly to his back. During the day if he rolls onto his belly on the floor he gets very upset and will start to cry. At nap time and bedtime he will roll onto his stomach and go to sleep. I'm terrified and roll him back but then

Posted before I finished....

Basically it's becoming a.struggle to get him to sleep. It's like he can't turn off his brain or something. I'll have to turn him back 3-4 times before he falls asleep and all the while he's moaning and complaining. Is it OK to let him sleep on his tummy? I'm terrified of SIDS.

I would leave him be: he can roll and presumably turn his head to the side and lift it up, which is the issue with not putting newborns down on their front. And he might have forgotten how to roll on to his back while awake but may do it while asleep. Put him down on his back then let him find his own sleep position. And rejoice that you have a baby who rolls over and goes to sleep!

He can turn his head from side to side. He's a big lad and can sit up independently too, just can't sit still long enough some times. I think he's at that awkward stage of wanting to crawl but not ready yet and getting frustrated

As long as:

  • you put baby down on their back each time you start a sleep session
  • baby is sleeping on a surface that meets safe sleep regulations (ie it's a mattress designed for baby, not your sofa etc)
  • baby put themselves into this position
  • there is nothing else in the cot that could be a suffocation risk eg loose blankets, comforter, cot bumpers

Then they are absolutely fine and you should let them crack on. But only if these conditions are met - never put him face down in your bed for example.

He ticks all the boxes. He does have a comforter but tbh could just take that away as he doesn't seem fussed by it anyway...

At this age as long as you put him on his back, it's up to him what position he gets into.

I was nervous when my baby started doing this, but I realised that I won't be able to turn him while I'm asleep and he was just flipping constantly so I left him to it. And he still loves sleeping on his tummy with his little booty in the air 😂

Let him sleep. SIDS only a risk if they don't get enough tummy time and they can't turn their head. A 7 months old definitely should be able to do that so so he is safe. My baby only wanted to sleep on her tummy from 6 months. Never thought it was dangerous as she put herself into that position and her neck was strong enough to move her face.
