Following for tips as I have none!!. We have a 3yr old born at 29 weeks who now has severe lung disease from all the intubations as a baby. He has inhalers but wheezes and coughs alllllll night too and it's particularly bad just now as he has a viral cough 😷

I found calpol plugins help my daughter when she has a cough. Quite expensive though.

I put a couple of drops of Olbas Oil on a tissue near my DC's bed. I find it works very well (you need to put fresh Olbas Oil on the tissue each night, as the essential oils evaporate).

If the nocturnal cough continues for more than a few weeks after the cold has gone, consider the possibility of asthma, as it often presents as a nocturnal cough in small children.

It feels like my daughter picks up a cough every 2 weeks 😩 a drink that can be sipped all night (bottle with straw end in the bed). I give her an extra pillow so she sleeps upright rather than led down. She has 2 puffs of her inhaler before she goes to sleep. Dry cough medicine before bed and she sucks a fruit pastel (I was trying all sorts 🤦😂) it actually helped. Good luck

There is a medicine called Bronchostop which we have used with moderate success. Also calpol plug-ins.

We have a humidifier which really helps! We open the window in the bedroom and then let it run most of the night, then wipe the window down in the morning if it needs it.

Onion syrup, warm bath with Epsom salts and lavender, blue tansy oil rubbed on chest, back of hands and soles of feet. As much vitamin C as you can, until bowel tolerance, during the day, watch his breathing and encourage him to close his mouth which will help clear his nasal passages. Stop all sugar and possibly reduce dairy too.

Humidifier and we've recently had success with broncho stop (as pp mentioned) actually noticed once giving it my DD was able to stop coughing & fall back asleep after a bit.

EdHelpPls · 20/02/2023 12:45

Vicks on soles of feet, then put socks over to stop it going on bedding. Unbelievable difference. I didn't believe it when I first read about it but was desperate so gave it a go and my cough really eased. DD has night cough ATM and helping her loads.

Another one for bronchostop.

a GP also recommended Pirotin which works well as well for nightime.

Do you have any evidence for the advice re giving up sugar, out of interest?

EvelynBeatrice · 20/02/2023 18:55

I dont know about Bronchostop but read some research a while back that said that honey and lemon worked better than all the over the counter cough bottles.

WhiskersPete · 20/02/2023 19:15

Humidifier. Also great for a blocked nose.

HappyMarriage · 20/02/2023 19:17

Vicks on chest and feet and a big bowl of steaming water in their room (if you don’t have a humidifier) - obviously make sure they can’t get to it

Antihistamines before bed!
Our daughter has had this on and off since starting nursery two years ago and it drove us insane. She was given asthma inhaler and all that stuff ruled out..eventually they said it was post nasal drip and advised some antihistamine at night which stops the overnight cough.
We also did humidifier, tilting bed, water to drink overnight, Vicks, calpol plug in, cough medicine. At one point she was coughing non stop at 4am then would be fully awake for the day so eventually we went to the gp who mentioned the antihistamine and saved our sanity.
