Formula + cloth = nappy rash?

I'm using cloth nappies which have been brilliant, but since moving to formula a few weeks ago, my 9.5 month old is now suffering from heinous nappy rash .

I'm assuming that it's down to the change from b'fed to formula - has anyone else had a similar experience? Any suggestions for a solution?

I'm reluctant to move back to disposables (even eco ones), but having used sudacrem, bepanthan and now Neals Yard baby barrier cream (the best so far, but still not beating it), I'm at a loss as to what else to try. Unfortunately, m'boy always seems to have a poo overnight , which doesn't help...

Help!!

Didn't notice any increase in nappy rash when my two stopped being BF and moved to formula.

Usually our bad cases of nappy rash were due to teething or eating too many oranges or not changing a dirty nappy quickly enough.

Metanium cream worked well for but us found sudacrem awful. I'd definitely keep up with the barrier cream for now.

I would think that if you could the drity nappy quickly you could halve the problem at least. Do you know if he is doing it soon after going to bed or when he wakes up (apparently it's usually one of the two and rarely in the middle of the night unless he tends to wake then too).

What nappies and liners are you using? You could try silk liners (bit expensive) and see if they help. I wouldn't give up on cloth just yet it is hopefully just a phase which he will get over. What wipes are you using? - I found that using bought wipes made things a lot more irritated for DD so I use reusable wipes and chamomile tea (you can just make up a batch and leave it in a bottle to keep to hand when it is change time). Giving his nappies a final rinse after a wash might help too in case you have a build up of powder residue in them.

There are lots of other things you can try too...sure you'll get lots of other suggestions but in the meantime hth

'dirty' nappy not 'drity'...and also the word 'change' should be in there somewhere....

will try again...'If you could change the dirty nappy....

If you suspect it's the formula causing the prob then changing to disps prob wont make any difference. I find Lansinoh excellent for nappy rash, creates a barrier to allow healing plus stops urine stinging the inflamed area

Thanks for your tips ladies.

Bought some eco disposables just for night time and at the same time discovered that what I had thought were 'parps' at his last bottle at night was actually a poo - so he would have been lying in that all night if I hadn't checked and possibly has done that previously in cloth .

So in some respects, disposables helped there!

Will continue to use cloth, but interspersed with eco-disposables at night until the rash has cleared. I usually use just cotton wool and water to clean, but am considering reusable wipes if I can ever find a handy nappy wipe case...
