My 3 year old keeps getting nits from nursery I'm trying my hardest to get rid of them- chemist keep prescribing Hedrin head lice treatment ( the one you put in for 8+ hours) I treat until I see none left, then repeat on day 7 and day 14 but they keep coming back 😢 any advice would be so appreciate

We use Hedrin once (although it needs more than one application!) for both DDs very long, easily tangled hair. DD1s hair is very thick. Kills both lice and eggs although you need to comb the eggs out or they stay stuck. DD1 has ASC and can't cope with the conditioner and intensive combing method, although will tolerate some combing with the Hedrin in. Hard to wash out, but we've found it effective

I use nit-not - which is just mineral oil, which you comb through, get rid of all the nits, and then do again a week later. The mineral oil either suffocates or dissolves bits of them, i forget, but it works like a charm on my curly-haired little one (and me), without smelling awful, or stinging, and actually leaves his long hair lovely.

Daily I spray with a water/tea-tree mixture, and it's always pulled back in a bun. And I just check once a week and put the oil on again if he's got them again (2 months clear atm, but I'm sure they'll re-appear soon)

Well done on everyone's losses.

I'm not happy, no shift for me again although when I look at lbs rather than stone and pounds I've apparently lost 0.2lb. But.... I've lost faith in my scales as it took many efforts to get a steady reading- fluctuating by 4lbs everytime I stood on them. New battery needed I think but that of course could scew previous readings. So disappointing as I've stuck to my plan which has always worked- I'm just older now 😕. As I've mentioned before I 'feel' smaller although I can still see slight tummy roll 😭

You need, to comb the hair with conditioner, for 7 to 10 days every day. It's the only way. The shampoos don't work.Hair dryers are sometimes good the lice don't like them.

Muffit · 17/02/2023 19:07

You need to use a Lice comb.

Do you need to come then out or does the lotion kill then all?

In theory it kills them, but it is always advisable to comb through in case you haven’t applied it evenly as it only takes one to start a new cycle. Be aware that nit not needs to stay on much longer than other treatments (half an hour, I think?) but I have always found it more effective than hedrin.
