Free access to paper

Not sure if I’m in the right place BUT here we go…

two DS, 5&7y. Both are very creative, youngest absolutely loves drawing, making things etc. The thing is they go through so much paper, I mean sometimes 20-30 sheets a day. I absolutely love the fact they are so creative (youngest would rather draw or make than play with toys) but they’re cutting paper up left right and centre to make stuff, sellotape everywhere, and there is so much waste!

I don’t want to stifle their creativity, but even if I say not to use too much they get so carried away with whatever they are making (today it was leaves, vines and grass) there’s just paper absolutely everywhere but like I say, so much gets wasted!

so my question is do you give your children free access to paper to help themselves, or do they ask you for it?

Cut it up smaller and give them pieces that are a quarter of the size. They will probably go through the same number of pieces, whatever size they are

I always got the rolls of paper from IKEA
Kea, they last ages!

A ream of paper (500 sheets) costs £3. You can buy recycled paper if you're worried about the environmental impact. Please don't ration it.

Where are you buying it for that price? We get through loads

Use cheap lining paper from DIY store. Just cut to size.

Clymene · 16/02/2023 20:02

@wegtryu Amazon or Waitrose (weirdly!) sell it for £3 a pack.

Wallpaper backing paper!

sl33pymomma · 17/02/2023 07:35

Thanks all! It’s not the cost that worries me, it’s more the sheer amount of paper and the environmental impact! Recycled paper is a good idea, and I’ll definitely look into the wallpaper backing paper as well!

As things that they could be 'wasting' goes, paper is surely one of the good things - it's recyclable, made from (crop) trees in the first place, it's biodegradable, animal friendly etc. vs. something like plasticine or playdoh

My nan used to keep envelopes, or at playschool one of the parents donated used printer paper (the accordion stuff from a dot matrix printer), or I keep a stack of stuff I've printed off for work (documentation etc. that I need for a couple of weeks only) and use the back of that.
