Hello all, my 18 month DS has quite curly hair, and as it grows I'm a bit lost on what to do with it! I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on products to use and/or techniques to care for and look after it. Attached pics, any advice would be amazing Smile

It looks glorious as is! Do you need to do much more than wash it and occasionally run a wide-toothed comb through it?

23mum · 15/02/2023 13:28

I agree it looks lovely as it is! No advice, sorry

Never brush it when dry. Always comb through when wet and then leave it to dry naturally if you can. You don't need products other than a gentle shampoo and a good moisturising conditioner at his age. If you want to dry it use a diffuser and never rub it with a towel.

@CoalCraft thank you!! At the moment I wash it every few days with baby shampoo and give it a comb through but sometimes it can get quite frizzy especially when it's bed headGrin I just wondered if there was anything I could be doing to take good care of it, I have curly myself that I haven't looked after

Use minimal product- so wash with water or a little conditioner. Use conditioner as a leave in, if it gets fluffy.

@OhhhhhhhhBiscuits thank you that's very helpful, do I need to get a toddler/child conditioner? If so do you have any you can recommend?

Fill a spray bottle with water and some conditioner and spray to refresh the curls each morning. Avoid conditioners with silicones as they coat the hair amd can cause build up. Boots do a range by rochelle humes called my little coco which is specifically for curly haired kids.

Curly hair is natually drier thsn straight hair so avoid using any shampoos with sulphates as they'll strip the hair's natural oils. Even some baby shampoo has sulphates.

Also, using a satin bedsheet/pillowcase will help prevent bedhead.

We use child's farm products but that's because it works on my daughter. They do a coco curly range now. It's a bit of trial and error. But go for a good moisturising one.

This is good advice

This looks exactly the same as my daughters hair, we use a normal shampoo then have a spray bottle of water with some conditioner in that we spray in her hair every day, gets rid of the frizz/ fluff and turns the hair into perfect ringlets.

wow thank you for the replies Smile will take it all on board

I have a little curly haired boy too! It's quite wild and beautiful, but we found it was getting quite matted in places, and he doesn't love very frequent full on washing and conditioning (also has eczema so v frequent bathing not good, sorry that's an aside!) so a friend recommended me this product which is apparently amazing and easy and quick to detangle.. I've ordered but not tried yet! www.lush.com/uk/en/p/super-milk-conditioning-spray

Kittypillar · 15/02/2023 14:17

This looks exactly like how my eldest daughter's hair was when she was younger 😊my hair is naturally wavy but she's got proper corkscrew curls, just like her grandma (my mum)...

It looks lovely as is, best thing I can recommend is only brush it when it's wet. We very rarely shampoo DD's hair, maybe once a week or if it's got actually dirty, and we just skip right to conditioner. We use a wide tooth comb for detangling while she has conditioner in it, then rinse. I recommend My Little Coco curl cream for after the bath, rub it over your hands and almost scrunch it in. And I use a leave-in conditioning spray for when it gets a bit "fluffy", as DD says...

HippyChickMama · 15/02/2023 14:18

Use a t shirt rather than a towel to dry it and scrunch/squeeze it to remove excess water rather than rubbing it. I also second the silk pillowcase or sheet (depending on what he sleeps on), dd is 9 with waist length 2c curls and wearing a silk bonnet to bed has made the single biggest difference to her hair

Cantu kids do curly shampoo and conditioner. Just stick to silicone and sulphate free though, and you’ll be fine. She had gorgeous hair. You might prefer to co-wash (just with conditioner) and just shampoo occasionally to remove products t build up if you use any. Wide tooth comb when wet, don’t brush it.
