My 8 and a half month old baby is still not crawling yet. Another baby at group is crawling like crazy and pulling up to standing. Makes me wonder what I'm not doing or what I can do to support my daughter in crawling. What are the signs that a baby is about to crawl? Do I need to be worried? We watch Ms Rachel is that bad? What can I do to help my baby crawl?

Don’t worry. And watch the “baby race” episode of Bluey on YouTube/IPlayer.

Yep, it's perfect!

my son crawled at 9 months. He's 13 months now and all he wants to do is crawl. He's not interested in walking - apart from holding on to furniture! I was 15 months when I walked so I think he might be similar!

Mine crawled at 9.5 months and then walked at 10 months.

Hi, my son was also not crawling at that time, at 6 months he also did not really want to roll over or spend any time on his front. We got prescribed to see a physiotherapist to check nothing was wrong and to give us some tips.
she checked him for any damage to his back or hips and it was all ok thankfully. Then she showed us some moves to do with him that were not as severe as just putting him on his front as he would always cry.

the best exercise was to use a firm cushion or mat (they had one from ikea that was folded so it turned into a step about 15cm high) and put the baby there so that the arms and chest were on the top and legs on the floor, like they were crawling up the step. Putting some toys up there really helped him.

Also holding him so he has to do some work with his core muscles, or leaning him on his side against your leg was good. Thinking about it, you can even do the first exercise with your legs as the step too.

after a couple of months of doing this he suddenly started crawling, it was amazing how quickly he did it! So that was at about 10 months in the end.

the physiotherapist said it is better that a child starts crawling before walking because they develop a better coordination where they use both sides of their body. He started walking at about 15 months and is very active and coordinated now at 2 years!

i wish you the best, let me know if you want any more details about the exercises.😊

Do you truly believe that it was the exercises which led to him starting to crawl?
It couldn't possibly just have been because he was ten months old anyway by then?

By the way, I had four babies and they all crawled at different ages. One at five months, one at ten months and the other two at nine months.
They're all normal adults now.

Both of mine crawled by 8 months. It was a nightmare. They wouldn't sit still, baby classes were impossible as all the other babies were enjoying the activities and mine would be under the table or licking buggy wheels
or pulling plug sockets out of the wall or in DD2s case crawling over to other babies in a pandemic and usually coughing and sneezing on them.

Enjoy it while you can sit down.

Maybe he would have started to crawl eventually, but he had absolutely no interest in doing so or even rolling over when we started trying. I think the exercises did strengthen the muscles in a more enjoyable way than tummy time which always ended up in tears, so I think they were a benefit as I had no idea what to do in that situation.
I am sure even without the exercises he would just be a few months behind where he is now, and it all evens out long term so no need to worry.

Far too early to be worrying. Mine started crawling at 5 months. It was not fun. It's not a reflection on you as a mother and it's definitely not something that comes with additional benefits, only additional difficulties. We were not baby proofed in time and had to rush to sort everything. It was not fun to be the only mother at book bug who couldn't sit still.

My experience is, expect for a few, every baby I've known focuses mainly on one skill at a time. Which is why you end up with the early crawlers, the early talkers, the early walkers and the early social butterflies.

My son crawled then walked early but didn't develop social skills like pointing, clapping etc until much later. Now there are babies his age (17 months) who were later to crawling and walking but are super chatty with lots of words whereas he can say maybe 5 words. Meanwhile he is climbing and literally running while they still totter about all wobbly holding onto their mum's hands. I'm exhausted!

It doesn't matter. She'll do things in her own time. Just enjoy her as she is.

How much tummy time would you recommend a day for 8.5 month old

They should be doing at least an hour a day from 3 months old.

I was about to say this too!

Me too!

In 7 minutes, your angst about this will be turned to smiles.

My DD honestly crawled once. She preferred to pull herself up and try to walk but this was a bit later. Let your DD have plenty of time on the floor. Thank your lucky stars she cannot move yet😂
