4 Year old wetting daily

My soon to be 5 year old is still having regular daytime accidents. From the beginning potty training was a battle for us and I wouldn't say he has ever been completely dry, but he has had weeks where he has no accidents. Since starting reception he had a handful of accidents , but these were mainly wet pants and not puddles. In the last couple of weeks things have seemed to have got so much worse, he's been having 1 to 2 accidents daily at school. School have been very supportive and have been sending him to the toilet regularly and noticing when he is jiggling, however the accidents have continued. Sometimes he will go to the toilet 3 times in the space of an hour. I've got a GP appointment on Monday, I'd already spoken to them once before but apart from testing his urine they just brushed me off. I've come home today and just cried, I feel like I've failed him and I really don't want this to have a negative impact on him as he gets older. Every time I see him come out of school carrying a little carrier bag, my heart sinks!

I agree.

OP, have a look at the ERIC website. Lots of helpful advice and information on there.

He definitely isn't constipated as he is very regular and honestly has no trouble with bowel movements. UTI could be a possibility, but he was tested for that the last time I approached the GP about this issue. I've looked at the ERIC website but think I need to have a proper look at it.

@Lolasyms I could have written this about my daughter. She’s at nursery at the moment but starting reception in September and I just don’t know what to do. I did contact ERIC and there are some days that she is dry. Nursery have done lots of reminding but like your son, my daughter can sometimes we 3 times an hour!! Has been checked for UTI several times never shown an infection. Please tell me it will come to an end soon! Any tips?

Thought I would jump on to reassure you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. My little boy is now in year 1 and has had no accidents this school year, he is also completely dry at night. I can’t say what exactly changed, maybe he just matured, but I remember panicking that he would be wetting himself as an adult. We did get referred to a bladder and bowel clinic, and after all the medical checks we did some bladder training which was basically making sure he drank every 90 minutes (I can’t remember exact measurements) and then used the toilet not long after. The idea was to try and ‘stretch’ the bladder and help him get into the habit of going to the toilet regularly . School were good and he was sent to the toilet at allocated times, this isn’t in place any more but like I said he hasn’t seemed to need it this year! Maybe you could talk to nursery about putting something similar in place. I also work in a nursery and so just to further reassure you, lots of our pre schoolers still have accidents regularly.
