Projectile Vomit

I have a 3 week old DS and since he was born, feeding has been an issue. He had lost a lot of weight at his Day 5 weighing, which really upset me. Thankfully, this has now massively improved, but the whole concept of feeding and ensuring he is taking enough formula has caused huge anxiety.

Sometimes I feed him and he projectile vomits (not every feed, maybe once a day). I don’t really understand why this happens. Is it because he is overfull so is getting rid of what his stomach can’t hold, or is it because he has taken his formula too quickly?
I never know whether I should feed him a small bit after vomiting to make up for what he has just lost or I just leave it.

some friendly advice would be great.

Losing weight and projectile vomiting are classic signs of reflux. I would book an appointment with the GP. The first thing they will probably do is prescribe gaviscon or carobel to thicken the milk to try and prevent the vomiting. If this doesn’t work there are other things they can prescribe.

I would say reflux also!

Carobel worked for us for a week, Gaviscon didn't do a thing.
We ended up getting a pescription, which at the time was ranitidine which they don't do anymore but it done the trick!
They offer alternative now but the same effect.

I would also, wind more frequently whilst feeding and keep him up right for 20 mins after a feed. Lying on your chest with head on shoulder with you sitting up seemed to be the most comfy for us both.

Give your GP a ring

Or go and get assessed for a tongue tie, solve the underlying problem (if it is that) and subsequently prevent both the short term and long term side effects of medication.

I'd bet CMPA. That's what it was with mine.

Are you doing paced bottle feeding?

My little one at 3 weeks had projectile vomiting , couldn’t keep anything down

after 28hr wait in a&e a ultrasound turned out he had pyloric stenosis and needed surgery to correct and we were sent to a different hospital

my other 4 child all had projectile vomiting at one point or another but thankful it was just reflux
