How often does your child go on overnight trips with school?

And if they do what age? And do they go to private or state?

I am struggling a bit with juggling work (their dad does nothing) and wondering whether they will have this option in future. Is it common for schools to do trips like this?

The first overnight stay was beginning of year 6 in a state school for 4 nights it was an activity break away.

Seeline · 13/02/2023 09:46

4 night residential in Y6 was the first in state school.

Both had been away with cubs/brownies for a couple of weekends before then.

DistrictCommissioner · 13/02/2023 09:48

before Covid, our school did 2 nights away once in Y2, Y3 and Y4. 3 nights away in Y5 and 4 nights away in Y6.

post Covid, last year Y6 had 2 nights away. This year Y5 are having 2 nights away and Y6 are having 4 nights away.

you couldn’t rely on it helping childcare in any way, shape or form!

3 night residential in P6 and P7

My son has done overnights with cubs, scouts, sea cadets etc but not school due to COVID. First week away with school is at Easter.

He has also done PGL on his own so that he’s not so bored during school holidays. I’m a single parent and no input at all from the dad.

What is concerning you?

CoalCraft · 13/02/2023 09:50

I think I went in three overnight stays through my entire school career, and all were in later secondary years - year 9 and on. I don't know how normal that is and it's been about a decade since I left school, but I don't get the impression that overnight trips are common.

I went on more overnight trips with the guides, with pony club, and when I was sent off to holiday camps in the holidays. Always when I was over ten, though.

Unless you have family who are willing to do regular sleepovers (my grandparents had me one night a week, for instance) I dob't think you can rely on getting the kids out overnight as a way of catching up on work.

@CombatBarbie @DistrictCommissioner @Seeline @mrsbitaly thanks so much! I am a bit ignorant with what age year 2 etc is? How old is Year 6?

At DDs school they start residentials in Yr3 for 4 nights in the summer term & try & do one overnight stay at school but it's predictable in terms of when it'll happen each Yr.

Tulipdsnd · 13/02/2023 09:51

@fortheloveofflowers just that I want them to have lots of experiences but I am unable to provide this alone and hoped schools did it!

I would recommend getting them into beavers/cubs/scouts. They’ll get loads of camping experience in a good group.

Seeline · 13/02/2023 09:55

Y6 is age 10-11

Y7 is secondary school

PuttingDownRoots · 13/02/2023 09:56

DD1 (11yo, now in Yr7) got 1 night away in Yr6 (ages 10-11). She will get two nights in the summer term in Yr 7.
DD2, now in year 5, has had nothing so far.

Their friend, in the school a few miles away, has had trips in Yr3- Yr6! (Except covid meant one cancelled)

Varies a lot from school to school.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/02/2023 09:56

Pre Covid - eldest went 5 days in each of P6 and P7. Never been in high school.

Youngest - the P6 trip is no more but they are hoping to bring back the P7 trip.

However both have been away loads with Beavers, Cubs and now Scouts at a far cheaper price than school too.

Sign them up for Beavers, Cubs.

DistrictCommissioner · 13/02/2023 09:59

Ah, if it’s about a wide range of experiences then Cubs is definitely the way forward, alongside school options.

Reception is 4-5
Y1 is 5-6
Y2 is 6-7
Y3 is 7-8
Y4 is 8-9
y5 is 9-10
Y6 is 10-11
etc up till year 13!

fortheloveofflowers · 13/02/2023 10:02

Highly recommend the scout movement. Sea Cadets is absolutely brilliant too. My son gets away a fair bit with them and loves it. They can start age 10.

I haven’t learnt how to reply to a specific message 😂😂

ChildminderMum · 13/02/2023 10:11

Mine did a 4 night residential trip to an outdoor activity centre age 10 in primary school.

Then a 3 night trip to France aged 12 in secondary.

Both cost around £300-400!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 13/02/2023 10:14

With brownies and cubs etc about 7

With school, 9/10 was the first, three nights in year 5. Cost less than £100

Then again in year 6 so 10/11, usually longer

Abroad is high school, 11-13

SpinningFloppa · 13/02/2023 10:16

My son had the option in year 6 age 10 but didn’t want to go so I didn’t send him. Nothing before that.
