Car seats in taxis

Hello all!

We're non-drivers, but we do have a car seat which we use when friends offer to take us out on a trip, or when we get a taxi anywhere.

Obviously, though, we can't carry the car seat around with us when we're out shopping or whatever, which limits the opportunity for leaping into a taxi when we're tired, or the bus isn't coming, or we've got a lot of shopping, etc.

Recently, though, I was told (by a taxi driver!) that taxi drivers were happy to :

a) take a baby or child who is strapped into their pushchair - if it's one of the big taxis so you can wheel the pushchair right in

or b) carry the child if he or she is sitting on a parent's lap with the seatbelt around both.

Can anyone tell me the legality and safety of this? Is it a matter of it being the passengers' liability, thus the drivers aren't too worried about it? Or is it in fact quite safe and legal? Or, alternatively, was the taxi driver talking rubbish?

Obviously I have no desire to put my daughter at any risk, but it sure would make things a lot easier. It does occur to me that on our frequent bus rides, she is only strapped into her pushchair - presumably the opportunities for accidents are quite strong there, too, though thank God we've never experienced one.

Anyone?

The driver is right.

We often use the big taxis, you can wheel the pushchair in and there are straps you can use to secure it.

There is an exemption in the law for taxis, so they don't need to be in a car seat. Not sure of the safety aspect of a baby being strapped into your seatbelt though.

I do not know how old your DD is or the legalities of the situation.

When we (very occasionally) get a taxi then we get one with a built in booster seat. They may not have them in UK so often, here in Germany it is quite easy to get one. Obviously, this is only an option for older (from about 4yo) children.

Aside from the legalities, you need to consider the basic safety of your child. I would not take my DCs in a car/taxi without car seats, even if it is legally allowed. I think that in Germany there is an emergency provision for this kind of case.

At the end of the day, the legal position would be no comfort if you were in an accident and your DD was hurt. I would not risk it.

Sorry but I don't agree! Taxis are exempt from the car seat law, but

a) I have always been told to remove the child from the pram even if there is room for it to remain up.

b) Never ever put a seatbelt around a child on your lap. In the event of an accident it could cause a lot of damage.
Drivers in my area always check that the seatbelt is not around the child too before they start driving.

however we don't have the taxis with straps to secure the pram.

Been googling and all the recommendations say never put a seatbelt around two people.

I wasn't sure about the seatbelt around two people but I have put the dd's (one at a time) on my lap and held onto them tightly.
