Constant hiccups

Hi everyone. I have a 3 month old DD. I’ve noticed she constantlyyyyy has hiccups. Literally about 6/7 times a day. They don’t seem to bother her but is this normal?

Have you had her assessed for a tongue tie? (A full oral function test by a trained professional, not a midwife/HV). Frequent hiccups are more common in tongue tied babies.

@pzyck hey, thanks for your reply. Funnily enough we noticed her tongue tie when I was breastfeeding but they said it was very mild and not worth snipping

Yep. My son was born hiccuping 🤣 now 18 mo and seems to have outgrown it a bit

So the NHS will only consider her for a frenectomy if it's interfering with feeding (faltering weight gain in the first few weeks or extreme difficulty for you). By the sounds of it, neither are applicable so that's a standard answer from the NHS. Privately, if a tie does exist and is causing any symptoms (reflux, etc) then they'll also perform it.

What nobody really tells you though (because it's regarded it as irrelevant, which is BS) is the long term impacts of having a tie. Improper jaw development, subsequent dental issues (overcrowding), often mouth breathing which is a much bigger problem than people think.

I'd definitely consider having it assessed to understand what restriction (as a %) it's causing.

Some babies hiccup a lot! Both of mine hiccuped loads on the womb and continued to do so for three to four months afterwards. Neither had tongue tie.

Thank you everyone! :)

@pzyck hello, they did offer her the snip but advised it really wasn’t worth it as it was very mild and they didn’t see it causing any issues but they left it up to me. I declined in the end but now I’ll rethink, thank you

@CoalCraft @DragonbornMum thank you both! Yes she was very hiccupy in the womb too 😀 hoping she’s just a hiccupy baby and there’s no issues x
