Switch to hypoallergenic formula

Help! My lo suspected to have CMPA and has been prescribed Aptamil pepti1. I was using SMA. Can I mix these two to slowly introduce the new formula. I tried the Aptamil alone, lo is not fussy but drank only 2 0z . She is 15 weeks.

Ideally not because every time she consumes the milk protein, it's causing an inflammatory response. You say she's not fussy so it shouldn't be an issue to do an immediate swap?

blisssg · 11/02/2023 17:52

Yes, I did an immediate swap she did not fuss or refuse outright but will not drink more than 2 oz . She has only drank 6 oz since morning. I gave in and gave her SMA which she took. She is very gassy and spits up a lot , that’s why GP suggested Aptamil 🤷‍♀️

What are her stools like... almost/watery, mucousy? Any skin issues?

Gas and spit up alone may be more indicative of an air intake issue than an allergy.

Just keep going with the Aptamil only, it might take a few feeds, but she will adjust and slowly build back up to where she was. DONT use any SMA. If the doctor wants you to switch then they think that the SMA is potentially harmful for LO

Aptamil doesn't taste very nice so it may be that
It's better than some of the other mils but it's still yuck. We've just changed from aptamil pepti 1 to neocate as she was still unsettled on it and it's vile so we add vanilla essence in it x

You can mix them, to seesaw across from fully ordinary formula to fully hydrolysed formula, but it delays when you might start to see any improvement.

She had skin issues for first few weeks but improved by itself. My older one has mild eczema. No issues with stool other than that she spits up a lot which is improving as I have stopped breastfeeding. She does not settle very easily and hates lying down. I have to put her to sleep upright on my shoulder. I don’t know if it’s a reflux issue or just a sleep issue. I am so confused. I don’t know if I should switch or not, at this point.

I was going to say vanilla essence, works really well.

Intolerance to lying flat, accompanied by spit up certainly sounds like reflux. It's getting to the bottom of what's causing the reflux is the challenge you'll face with the NHS.

If you can afford to pay for an oral function assessment from a qualified professional, I certainly would do that alongside switching formula. That way you can simultaneously determine both (either things will improve on the dairy free formula without any physiological intervention and you'll hopefully be told there's no oral restriction, or there won't be any change on the formula and there might be a tie).

Sucessinthenewyear · 11/02/2023 18:45

Sounds more like reflux than cmpa.

blisssg · 11/02/2023 19:48

Thanks . I was thinking the same if it’s really CMPA or not !!
so back to the original post, if I try Aptamil , is it safe to mix with SMA?
Honestly , she is nearly 4 months and still waking up every 2 hours , if she drinks little like this , she may wake up every hour!
I really want to start slowly with Aptamil as I don’t want to reduce the amount of feed at all.
