Clothes for 1 year old?

I’m looking to pick up some clothes second hand and in sales for my DD for summer when she turns 1 and will also be starting nursery. What would you send a 1 year old to nursery in over summer when the temperature can vary quite a bit throughout the day? Do you stick to long sleeves/legs for sun protection or more summery clothes (we are in a warm part of the country relatively speaking but it’s still the UK)? Would they still wear a vest/body suit under everything or just leggings and T-shirt? Is there any point buying dresses for a 1 year old?

I was a big fan of romper suits, dress and knicker sets, Capri leggings and short sleeve tops etc for DD age 10/12mths in the summer. Always with the option of a cardigan if it got cooler.

I bought lots of those little summer dresses like in H&M and when it was chillier DD would wear leggings under them and a cardigan and when it was warmer she’d just wear the dress. I only bought a few pairs of shorts as there seemed limited time when she’d wear them. Also no vest or all in one; by the time they’re one they can wear the same number of layers as us.
A good sun hat that covers their neck too is really good.

Mine mostly wore play suits with poppers under the bum in hot weather since shorts never really stayed up and it’s a big more dignified that nappy hanging out or those frilly knickers. No vest if it was really hot. I used p20 kids sunscreen since it’s supposedly once a day (although wouldn’t trust that on holiday) but I figured it’s a bit more protection in case nursery are sloppy with reapplication.

Leggings and short sleeve vest/tshirt for hot weather, wouldn't bother with dresses if they are crawling. When it's a bit cooler, leggings/vest/long sleeve top etc

My DS was at that age mostly dressed in loose long sleeved t-shirts , with loose pants (for girls you can go for a skirt), I would also bring a light cardigan or rain jacket for when it gets cold or rainy. Easy to wear and play in, not too hot but still offering decent sun protection.

I'd leave dresses until she's walking. Easy enough to pick done up in a bundle in summer if she is.

Nursery: leggings - full, capri & short, t-shirts, longish tops, few cardis. Vests just depends on the weather, but I'd buy colourful ones & they can be more if another t shirt layer they can strip her down to.

hats, WELL NAMED!!

There are always bundles for sale, I don't think you need to be too far ahead of yourself, unless you see something you really like.

When dd was one year old I always dressed her in a body suit, Leggings (or shorts in summer) and a t - shirt. Ds is always in a body suit, joggers and short or long sleeved t shirt. In summer just a romper or body suit.

I always out a fleece or hoodie in her nursery bag as well and a sun hat.

I think most nurseries will put on and take off clothes as required. I know e.g. during the heat wave our nursery stripped the kids down to their nappies. Our nursery also applies sun screen. I assume that they all do that but worth checking with them.

I didn't bother with dresses or tights at one year old.

Just to add I like body suits because I don't like carrying babies or toddlers without one as a top will always ride up. It just looks uncomfortable but I don't know if it's really necessary. It also holds the happy in place nicely.

With DD we switched to vests (or nothing in summer under her t shirt) when she started potty training

mynameiscalypso · 06/02/2023 12:54

Leggings and long sleeved t shirts here - our nursery always request that babies are wearing long sleeves and trousers in summer.

Burpcloth · 06/02/2023 12:56

My daughter didn't wear dresses aged 10-14months (between crawling and being steady on her feet for her) despite having been gifted some lovely ones. They just get caught under their knees, or under their feet if they're wobbly and up and down a lot.

Leggings and t-shirts (short or long sleeve) are great for when it’s hotter.

If you’re buying second hand then bear in mind some things may have shrunk a lot from lots of hot washes, so you may need to buy a size up.

Twizbe · 06/02/2023 13:06

Leggings and a t shirt mostly for nursery.

I also go these great sleeveless rompers from sainsburys. Technically boys but very neutral and they looked great on DD.

BabyB2022 · 07/02/2023 03:34

Leggings and t shirt mostly, or cycling shorts when hot. I found leggings best when she was just walking to avoid quite so many scraped knees, but sent in shorts when really warm. I try to avoid white or light coloured clothes for nursery as they get so ruined and get what I can second hand.

WanderingWildflower · 07/02/2023 04:31

Mine was 1 last summer and she was mostly in leggings and a long/short sleeved T-shirt or sometimes a romper. So many lovely rompers around!!
