Logistics of living in a flat

Hi all. DD is 9 days old, and I am starting to think ahead to when DP goes back to work next week, and how I will manage on my own during the day. We live in a first floor flat, and have a travel system buggy (ie car seat plus buggy) - if I go out, how do I get everything downstairs if I can't carry the car seat plus buggy at once? Is it acceptable to do it in 2 trips? Not sure what else I can do, but hate the thought of leaving baby upstairs even just for a minute - am I a terrible mother for even considering it? Very small block of flats btw - only 3 others on our floor, and the front door to our flat is not visible from the others.

I';d take the buggy down stairs first thn go back for the baby it's only like leaving the baby upstairs whilst u go down stairs in a house i assume ????

not ideal but best option IMO is keep baby in flat and take buggy down - can you leave buggy on the gruond floor though?

Hello I live on the top floor of a small block of flats, and also had a travel system. I used to put ds in the car seat, then take the main pushchair down, put it up, and then go back up for ds in the car seat. I guess it depends how strong you are to an extent!

And also what your stairs are like - ours are an absolute hazard and it would have been far more dangerous for me to struggle down two flights of stairs with a baby and a pushchair than it was to leave him in our front room for 30 seconds. I used to run like anything up and down those stairs though, not sure what I thought he'd be doing up there, strapped into his seat

I also used to put my door on the latch so it was closed but not locked, so unlikely that anyone would go in. Though it's really quiet here, so very few people around in the day anyway.

Now however, I have a different pushchair which I collapse downstairs and leave under the stairs. Is there no way you can store your pushchair downstairs?

I'm in a 1st floor flat and leave the buggy in the hall. Or go for a sling instead [grin'

cna you leave buggy downstairs chained to a rail?

otherwise there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with leaving baby upstairs while you take buggy downstairs. dont beat yourslef up over these things

Thanks all, guess I am being a bit of a neurotic firdt-timer!

Can't really leave buggy downstairs as the local teenagers tend to hang out there, also the security door is broken . But glad to know I am being silly for worrying - before she was born I had no issue with this, but now she is here...

A slight might be a good idea. Even if you don't use it in place of a buggy, you can use it to carry DD and buggy downstairs with only one set of hands.

MrsTittleMouse · 07/02/2008 19:45

Sorry, that should be sling. It's been a long day.

you'll get your own method. i lived on a second floor flat with my first son, and in the end used to carry the whole pram up complete with baby.

if you are going out for a walk (ie not in a car) dont bother with car seat.... they are much better off lieing flat in the buggy.

yes leaving your baby for a few seconds while you take stuff downstairs is fine...

mine are used to me
strapping them in car and leaving them in the car (on a big private drive way with shut gates and gate alarms on each gate) whislt i go back in the house to turn off lights, collect forgotten stuff, turn on burglar alarm etc etc.

they are fine

you cant be with children for every second of every day

They have a big house and are used to being there while i take dustbins out to the street (they have a huge drive), go out to garage to freezer / tumble dryer / do chickens etc
