Can dairy intolerance make a child sick?

Hi, so my 5 year old has been off dairy since June 2022 due to dairy intolerance and we are now trying the dairy ladder. I gave him 1 biscuit a week ago and 2 days later he had diarrhea and vomiting (I assumed a bug). Then I tried half a biscuit 5 days ago and yesterday he had a whole one again but 12 hours later he has been sick. Could it be the dairy intolerance or something else? (He has never been sick from dairy before) thanks

They can be common symptoms of an intolerance

It’s a common sign of cmpa (cow milk protein allergy).

Yes, when you cut out the allergen and then start reintroducing the symptoms can actually be worse. He may well need more time before you start the ladder, but best to talk to an allergy specialist

Oh thank you - I wonder if I try the biscuit for a 3rd time to be sure. And whether the symptoms will get less if we keep on with the ladder....I just don't want him to lose weight as it has been really hard to get any weight on him. We are seeing the dietician in Feb....

I’m not quite sure why you’re keen to try the biscuit again? You’re seeing the dietitian this month, just wait until your appointment?

Bring up the weight issue then too. It may be that his weight is perfectly fine and you’re just hyper aware of his food intake and therefore worrying. Or if he is a bit underweight then ask the dietitian for food suggestions that will help.

If he has any symptoms you need to stop and retry the ladder in 6 months times.

This isn’t something to mess about with. Just stop, talk to the dietician and try again when advised. Not sure why you’d assume a bug when you’re introducing something he has an intolerance to!

Hi thanks, I assumed a bug because online I read a reaction is usually within 2 hours, not 2 days? And he has never been sick from dairy, even when we tried the ladder a few months ago. The gastroenterologist said keep going even if symptoms, as long as he doesn't lose weight - eek, I hate this.....

My son is six now and we started the milk ladder again with him at 5. Almost immediately after half a biscuit he said his tummy hurt. The next day he had eczema round his mouth and was doing stinky wet poos.

We've given him the choice now as to whether he ever wants to try again. So far it's a no. He doesn't want to have the reaction.

He's also very skinny. He's on the 99th for height but the 91st for weight. He's the definition of lanky lol. He does eat well and we got good at healthy fat foods when he was weaning. He's always been super skinny. Coconut yoghurt, avocado, full fat dairy free butter etc. all good things for him. I used to worry a lot about his weight but now I see it's just him and his build. He has a grandfather and a cousin who are just the same.
