Chicken pox parties?

Do these still happen? And how do I find one?? I've just learned it can be 3 weeks off nursery if my daughter gets it once enrolled there... and that would be unbelievably disruptive and expensive so I'm keen for her to get it before she starts... but where to find it?!!!

DD nearly lost her sight in one eye because of an infected pox on her eyeball. If you had seen her trying to claw out her own eye because of the itchiness you would not be so blasé about exposing your child to chicken pox.

This is so irresponsible unless you then plan on quarantining them for the following 3 weeks as they are contagious before spots appear otherwise you could be exposing a child you have purposefully tried to infect to potentially vulnerable people.

That's a very good point. Hadn't thought of that and that wins the argument

Chicken pox is normally a minor illness, but I still wouldn’t purposely make my child catch it…

I'm not blasé about her getting it! I want her to get it when it's more likely to be mild. I can't shelter her from all risks forever

But point taken about exposing others more vulnerable while incubating (preggers people etc)- that's fair enough reason not to

Chickenpox parties are cruel.Nobody should be forcing their children to become ill!

My 8mo and 5yo had CP last summer and my 5yo inparticular suffered dreadfully. One night she woke again and again writhing about and howling in pain, itching and itching in desperation and spiking a horrible fever and vomiting too- I've never seen her in that much pain.It was awful.

For all those advising to vaccine, it'd definitely not 100%. My child is vaccinated by recently got it although only 4 days off school as the scabs came out and crusted over really quickly!

Here is a good article for you, OP

www.ox.ac.uk/research/everything-you-need-know-about-chickenpox-and-why-more-countries-don’t-use-vaccine

There can be terrible sequalae of the varicella zoster virus in children, that although rare, are real and even ‘simple’
scarring can have life long effects on confidence etc. It is a nasty virus. FWIW, I have vaccinated both my children.

jannier · 02/02/2023 22:40

Chicken pox can have nasty side effects like sepsis some die. You can get it more than once....my daughter had it 3 times. Get a vaccine

Mummyford · 02/02/2023 22:48

The vaccine can protect your child from developing shingles in future. Having known someone who suffered terribly from shingles, that was reason enough for me.

I seriously thought this was the same kind of myth as people putting coke in baby bottles.
