4 month with never ending wind

Hello everyone, first time poster here so go easy on me please 😊

my little boy is coming up to 5 months old. He is formula fed. Since he was born he’s suffered with wind on an evening; at around 7 weeks old on advice from HV we changed his formula from cow and gate to Hipp Organic. He didn’t seem as ‘bunged up’ after the change and would poo every other day as opposed to once every 4 days!

We gave him Infacol, which I’m not sure whether it did anything other than make him sicky after feeds. Sometimes we would wake up and he would have brought up some of his feed in his Moses basket which was then in his eyes! After the third time of that happening I was too ‘scared’ to put him down straight away so ended up sitting up with him for at least an hour after each feed.

Anyway, fast forward to now, we stopped the Infacol, he was turning his head away from it and spitting it out anyway so thought it might be a good time to try! This has pretty much stopped all of the posseting - I don’t notice him bring anything up into his mouth and swallow that anymore either.

The problem is, he is so windy at night. He’s constantly moving around, trying to push out wind, his eyes are closed during this (it’s me awake!) but there are times when he does wake up. He doesn’t cry in discomfort but I’m almost certain it ruins his sleep as he’s been quite whingey during the day recently and just wants to sleep.

He has naps in his cot now, wake windows of no longer than 1.5 hours at the moment but at night he just won’t stay asleep when I can see that’s what he wants (as soon as I rub his tummy he turns his head and sleeps). I feel if the wind was eliminated, he’d get a good rest.

I don’t know what to do now - my friend made the mistake of saying ‘by week 12 this magically stops‘ 🙄 so now I’ve got all sort in my head, such as:

Has he got an allergy?

Do I try Colief?

Do I try yet more bottles e.g Dr Brown? (started on Tommee Tippee, then used their anti colic, then went to Avent on recommendation and must have spent at least £100 on bottles and new steriliser and teats etc)

Someone suggested some homeopathic drops such as R37 - do I try that?

We kept him on size 2 teats as HV said he had silent reflux as he used to grunt - do we change to a bigger teat?

if you’ve made it this far thank you for reading!

Yes, I think there's a very good chance he has an allergy, probably Cow's Milk Protein Allergy. Have a read of the symptoms in the link and see if any are familiar Flowers

Some babies are just windy! Both of mine were, especially my first - used to grunt and groan all night til 5 months or so. She was terrible at burping so I think it was just the air she swallowed during feeds wriggling it's way through. No allergies or anything.

My little one was horribly windy. Would toss and turn all night and let put the tiniest fart. Have you tried gripe water? It helped us

Thanks for the replies. I think I posted today because I’m so sleep deprived and he seems so incredibly miserable today, it feels like he shouldn’t be like this if he’s ‘fine’. But obviously he can’t tell me otherwise!

I’ve tried gripe water - he wasn’t a fan and it made him bring up his feed so I didn’t persevere.

Every day is a new day I guess and hopefully he will be a bit happier tomorrow 😕

@MissJam sleep deprivation is the worst thing I've ever endured.

Did you read the link I posted? Was it any use?

MissJam · 02/02/2023 21:06

I did - thank you. I think I might actually give them a ring because the HV just shuts any conversation about it down due to him being on the 91st percentile. At least they might have the time to listen and hopefully offer advice.

I’ve had an awful day today - but tomorrow is a different day let’s hope it’s a better sleep tonight. Thanks again

4 months is typical sleep regression time, it could be that. But it sounds to me like reflux - HV said he has silent reflux, is he medicated for it?

MissJam · 02/02/2023 22:45

He isn’t no. She told me to try and ring the GP and I tried 38 times one morning and no appointments. He was doing ok with sleeping and didn’t seem bothered when laying on his back but today has been a particularly grizzly day.

I did buy some carobel - but never got round to using it. Do you think it’s worth a try?

If you can't get through to the GP it might be worth trying a comfort milk while you wait?

PritiPatelsMaker · 03/02/2023 07:02

And they shouldn't shit you down because he's on the 91st centile. Some babies who have CMPA feed to try and soothe the pain and can end up overfeeding.

MissJam · 03/02/2023 09:32

Thank you so much for the replies. I’ve somehow got him an appt today, it must have been meant to be as every other time I’ve tried it’s been engaged/no appointments left.

I also rang Allergy UK who advised me to try and ‘suggest’ trialling a prescription formula rather than tell the GP how to do their job 😂

i’ve got the list of his symptoms written down, hopefully this doctor will agree. Allergy UK said they should go off something called imap?

Anyway thanks again - I shall add the comfort eating to the list just incase!

Hi
Yeah it sounds like cmpa and reflux. Defo trial the prescription milk and carobel. Prescription milks are very thin to compare to regular formula's. With carobel it's a trial and error, might have to go up a teet size though. You might see the difference with the milk straight away or it might take 4-6 weeks. Good luck and any questions please message. I'm no expert, just been through it twice 😫 x

Thank you. I’m now bloody nervous about starting this new formula (I should stop searching and just get on with it 😂) but I’ve got carobel so will try it with this new milk.

Thank you for the offer to message I appreciate that. I’ll also remember that I could take a little while to see any improvement (if any at all).
