Hand luggage for baby when travelling?

I can’t get hold of the airline at the moment to ask but just wondering what people’s experiences are when travelling with a baby (as a lap infant). If you take a travel pram like Yoyo on the plane as hand luggage does it count as the baby’s only handluggage or can you also take a small backpack/changing bag? We could check the pram on for free but prefer to have it with us at all times as we have a layover and also don’t want to risk damage in the hold. It’s a standard long haul airline, not a budget one (Air Canada and Air New Zealand).

Air Canada site says ONE extra standard piece of hand luggage for a lap infant, max size 55x40x23 cm. So this would be the only item allowed extra for your child.

Note that the Yoyo doesn't actually meet those size requirement.

I've only ever flown budget with the kids but it's 2 pieces of baby equipment that can go in the hold (so the buggy but you leave it at the gate - I've got a standard umbrella fold buggy though) and a changing bag - I just take a normal rucksack so I can pack in more stuff.

And for Air New Zealand the website says also one piece of carry on for your lap infant. There the Yoyo would be fine as they only take the total of height+width+length.

some Airlines allow no extra hand luggage for a baby, just a pushchair and car seat that can be checked in or handed in at the gate. Their things need to be included in your hand luggage.
