6 week old- Strong pee smell!

My baby boy is 6 weeks old this week and he pees like an absolute champ, however his urine smells very strong and you can even smell it on his clothes when he's wearing a nappy that needs changing. I change him regularly and he doesn't have any signs of being unwell but my mother in law mentioned it could be a UTI which made me wonder. Anyone else's baby have strong smelling urine? He's been like it for weeks and i never particularly noticed it until my mother in law mentioned it, his urine is a normal pale yellow colour.

Can you try, and will he take, cooled boiled water?
It might help between feeds? He’ll probably screw his face up …
I hope you work out why it is and that all is well.

Are you sure it's his urine, not the nappy? I remember (although it's a long time ago now) that Pampers used to stink when wet - it was the absorbable filling that stank, not the actual urine.

I changed to a different brand because of it.

My mum used to be obsessed with telling me my babies' pee smelled strong! I used to wonder what on earth she wanted me to do about it. It's more likely just the concentration of it having collected in the nappy.

I think it's the nappy! I wasn't worried about it at all until my MIL mentioned urine infection and now i've just been constantly worried that he's got one although he has no fever or symptoms of it other than strong smell of pee but he fills his nappies quickly and regularly which i thought contributed to it.

I agree it could be the nappy. I'm always surprised at how much my DS' nappy smells of wee with some brands compared to others.

That sounds just like my MIL hah! She keeps going on about it and at first i was like "Well what do you want his pee to smell like?" I'm thinking it's normal now but i'm going to mention it to my health visitor when she comes this week just to make sure

I agree it's probably the nappy, try a different brand if you don't like it.

I wouldn't give him water. He's only tiny, and his wee isn't dark so he's not dehydrated. If he was dehydrated, he'd need more formula or breastmilk, not water anyway.
