Baby outgrown our room

Hello everyone, my DS is almost 5 months old and has outgrown his mosses basket so am moving him into his own room. I have been sleeping on an air mattress with him as the recommendation is to sleep with them until 6 months. I can’t get his cot into our room as there is no space. He is sleeping through the night but I am struggling to sleep with him as I have a baby monitor that alerts my phone when he moves/ sound is detected. I’m finding it hard with the lack of sleep as I’m waking up every hour and a half or so.

would appreciate your thoughts

Can you get a travel cot so you can keep him in your room a bit longer?

Wonderalice6 · 01/02/2023 15:53

I have got a travel cot but not sure if it will fit

If you are in the same room as him you don’t need a monitor switched on.

Why have you got a baby monitor on if you sleep with him in the same room? Or perhaps I am misunderstanding x

Wonderalice6 · 01/02/2023 16:13

I like having it as an extra

An extra for what? Do you think you would possibly sleep through your baby crying from a few inches away?

FurryGiraffe · 01/02/2023 16:22

As PP says, you'll hear a baby who is right next to you (and if you slept through crying you'd probably sleep through a phone alert!)

I don't understand the purpose of an alert when a baby moves. Babies are supposed to move. It's not concerning. It's concerning when they don't move!

LeafHunter · 01/02/2023 16:22

Surely either turn the monitor off or sleep
in a different room!!

Outfor150 · 01/02/2023 16:23

You don’t need the monitor.

RooBear9 · 01/02/2023 16:58

You don't need the monitor if you're in the same room, surely that's just common sense?

trrk · 01/02/2023 17:03

Turn off the monitor or silence your phone? What were you doing before when the baby was in your room? The travel cot is a good idea if it will fit assuming your bed is more comfy than the air mattress. Is there other furniture you could temporarily remove from your room to make more space?

megletthesecond · 01/02/2023 17:09

You only need a baby monitor in a different room. It will drive you nuts otherwise.

SummerInSun · 01/02/2023 17:11

Agree - no monitor if you are in the room. Babies are noisy sleepers. If you are using the monitor it will amplifying that noise. If it's disturbing you it's probably disturbing him too - you'll both sleep better without it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/02/2023 17:12

Just turn off the monitor, it’s unnecessary when you’re in the same room. Trust me you’ll hear if they need you.

olderthanyouthink · 01/02/2023 17:13

What's the point of a monitor that tells you a sleeping baby has moved? Babies move, if they're in a clear cot nothing is likely to happen to them.

I have a monitor that tells me DS has covered his face or cot out of his floor bed but it's not alerting me at night because I'm asleep! He can't go anywhere it's just handy for naps to tell me he's up

Soapnotshowergel · 01/02/2023 17:21

Switch the monitor off. He's literally right there, you'll hear him if he cries.

Why are you sleeping on an air bed?

naemates · 01/02/2023 17:36

If it's the monitor that keeps you up and you don't want to lose the monitor, what is it you're asking?

bussteward · 01/02/2023 17:37

Turn off the monitor?!

MooseBreath · 03/02/2023 05:28

As gently as possible, you are being ridiculous. Either sleep in the baby's room on the air mattress and turn off the monitor, or sleep in your own bed and turn on the monitor.

The safe sleep guidance is purely that - guidance. It is more dangerous to have a sleep-deprived mother liable to drop the baby or absent-mindedly let an accident happen than to have a 5 month old in a separate room with a monitor.

PurBal · 03/02/2023 05:37

What @MooseBreath said.
We moved DS into his room at 4w and I moved out at 4mo. We have 2ft thick walls, he has slept through from about 6mo and doesn’t wake for a feed. The monitor is off over night. We will hear him if he’s really distressed. I don’t want to hear him move around his cot, chat to himself in the morning or grunt in the night. He’s a really noisy sleeper.

Pinkychilla · 03/02/2023 05:57

I was very anxious about mine so I had an Angel care breathing monitor thats sensor goes under the mattress and will alarm if they stop breathing it gave me peace of mind and meant I could sleep and I even used it for a few years as it alerted me when they got out of bed too when they were older, everyone's different but that really worked for me and helped me be able to sleep at night

PinkSyCo · 03/02/2023 06:18

Why do you need to be alerted everytime he moves? That’s craziness!
