Temps of 40

Looking for some advice, my sons temp has been over 40 since getting home from nursery yesterday, he had some calpol when he got home and his temp went down but all night it’s been spiking back up again. What would you do? Would you ring 111? At one point it was 40.6 and his breathing was fast. He had his injections a week ago, is it something to do with that? I’ve just checked his temp now and it’s 40.2 :(

Aww bless him. Which injections? 1 year?
I would get him checked with a temp that high!

Can you give him Neurofen? Calpol does nothing for my daughters temps. You could see if that helps bring it down.

Bless him, I would definitely call 111 and want him seen. Try not to worry, they catch all sorts from nursery and I’ve had this same thing with my DC ♥️

Have you been giving nurofen too? Alternating between nurofen which lasts 6 hours (3 maximum doses in 24hrs) and calpol which lasts 4 hours (4 maximum doses in 24hrs) should help keep the fever down.

If you’re worried ring the GP first thing and get them checked over. Kids can go down hill quickly so it’s useful to put your mind at rest. Hope they feel better soon

Yes it was the 1 year injections. Yeah I have Neurofen but I have just give him calpol, don’t I have to wait 2 hours?

I am worried that his temp is so high and have read online if it’s over 40 to ring 111 as if can cause convulsions 😣

It can take upto 1 hour to start working. I would wait an hour see if the temp comes down so you can space the medicine out to stretch the 24hrs if possible. If it’s not reducing then give nurofen.

It is possible to give nurofen and calpol together they are different APIs with different mechanic pathways.

How is he aside from the fever?

Not all children have convulsions, it’s due to high temps but also the child’s predisposition to having convulsions. Some kids are just more likely to have them than others.

It’s super scary being a parent, I have been in your shoes many a times. You are controlling the situation as much as possible, you physically can’t do any more. Get into your doctors to be seen today. That should hopefully make you feel better and relax (slighlty)

Firstbaby1234 · 01/02/2023 07:19

@ShowOfHands he seems okay! He’s been wriggling all night and hasn’t really slept but he hasn’t been crying

Ring 111 - seek medical advice. He's a baby, you're his parent and you're worried- seek advice.

Babytwodue · 01/02/2023 07:25

I think after the one year injections it’s quite common for them to get a temp one week later. My little one did, it lasted quite a few days and we went to the walk in as he also developed a rash.
I have looked online but can’t find a link, I’m sure it listed it in the booklet they hand out xx

Please seek medical advice now.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

i believe the latest info is that febrile convulsions are triggered by a fast rise in temperature, not how high the temperature is.

NICE also says don’t give meds just to get temperature down if he’s otherwise ok; do give them if he is feeling rubbish.
