Periorbital cellulitis

Hi

My nearly 2 year old has just started with a 3rd case of periorbital cellulius and has been referred to an eye specialist to determine what's causing it. It goes away with antibiotics but it has returned 3 times in less than 2 months. Has anyone else experienced this with their child and if so what was the cause and treatment? Wondering if it could be a blocked tear duct but the optician couldn't decide if so or reoccurring sinusitis that's maybe causing the cellulitis. I've asked the doctor for a longer course of antibiotics this 3rd time but he wasn't willing to try this .

Thanks in advance

Hi
just wondering if you ever found the cause. My daughter has it had it twice and I am beside myself with worry. I started googling and wish I didn’t now. You’re the only person I’ve found whose child has had it twice.

thank you in advance. Hope all is well now xxx

Hi

No we were never sure of the cause. The 3rd time in january was the last time, each time she was tried on a different antibiotic and I think the 3rd time the antibiotics course was prescribed for a few days longer so maybe the first few times the antibiotics weren't being taken for long enough to fully kill the bacteria, I dont know. We did see an eye consultant during the 3rd case of it, he said it could be a stye hordeolum but wasnt 100 percent. I mentioned chronic sinusitis wgixh he said was a possibilty but to try the bathing and drops before looking into that with ent.He prescribed drops to keep the eyes moist for 3 months and told us to place a warm cloth on it throughout the day. My daughter not even 2 at the time wouldn't tolerate that at all but she got used to the drops. So the 3rd case of antibiotics and drops did the trick and she's been ok since January ,touch wood. It is very scary as the onset of it is so fast and must be treated asap as I'm sure you've read can progress to orbital cellulitus of the actuall eyeball. If doctors can't get you in for antibiotics like mine, go straight to a and e if ithappens again. Hope she doesn't get it again.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I’ve been going crazy searching the internet for others who have been through similar with there little ones as I all I keep seeing when I google is it’s so rare for it to keep coming back so I’m beside myself. She’s healthy and happy in herself otherwise it just comes on all of a sudden so feel like I’m constantly on edge.
im hoping the same maybe the first lot of antibiotics didn’t get rid of all the bacteria which is why it’s came back!
its just such a worry and your right seeing it come on so quick is just so scary I think that’s why I’m more scared if it coming back as it happens so quick and she just gets so poorly instantly xxx

The opticians can take a look as well, as silly as that sounds. The doctor told me to take my daughter there to rule out a blocked tear duct, they weren't much use but she wouldn't let them look properly and they were the ones who referred me to the hospital eye consultant and I was seen in the hospital that same week. I did wonder if a little scratch had caused it as her and brother are like cat and dog but like I said we never knew for sure. The drops he prescribed were not for an infection just drops to keep them moist that I'm sure you can probably get in the chemist. You could mention this to your doctor to see of worth trying or not. My sister works with someone who's toddler had it multiple times and his was a blocked tear duct but yes the Internet puts the fear of God in you.

The hospital want to see us again in January so I’m hoping nothing occurs between now and then they tried to get some more bloods from her but they tried three times and just couldn’t get blood!
did your little one not have any symptoms around the eye? See my oldest had the block tear duct and my youngest who keeps getting it has no symptoms of it. It’s just puzzling. But nice to speak to someone else who has been through it so thank you for getting back to me xxx

Her symptoms were a red swollen eye with pus. At its worst it was so swollen it was practically closed shut. Its horrible, I read a lot up on it and I think I read it was important to make sure the course of antibiotics was given for long enough. My doctor wasn't willing to prescribed r for 2 weeks as can upset their stomach but the 3rd time they gave a different antibiotic that was prescribed for a few days longer so I think it was this that got rid of it .
