Hi there, im new to this site. im 29 , pregnant with my first child, i have a oscar scan , my scan came back looking fine but my bloods made my result high risk for downs. Although its high i have been given a 1 in 260 chance. they have offered a amnio test when im 16 weeks. is there any one out there who has had a amnio test?
im stuck as the amnio could mean i loose the baby

i think you should re post in a different section. have a look in pregnancy.
welcome to mumsnet

is one in 260 considered high? at my hospital i think the cut-off was one in 221, so if you're below you get told if you're above you are told it's fine. what are the hospital advising? really, one in 260 sounds like long, long odds to me, and those bloomin' blood tests are notoriously unreliable.

oh yes, alfie, you'll probably find more people to speak to about this if you post in the pregnancy section as well. welcome to MN, you've had a horrible shock but people here are very helpful.

in my hospital its 1;250. if you think about that its less than 0.5%, and that doesn't seem like that high a risk really.

i personally only think its worth an amnio if its that important to you and if you would terminate the pregnancy.

go to pregnancy and then up on the right (it's actually not very obvious) there's a thing saying 'to start a new conversation click here'.

alfie... i understand that you are shocked and frightened, but one in 300 isn't a high risk. it's just maths. i mean i understand you have a different perspective at the moment and you'd rather it was 1000 to one, but if your baby is one of the 259 or one of the 999 that's all that matters to you right now. i actually wonder if a private facility would have a higher cut-off point because they get the cash from the amnio?

i remember a obstetrician friend saying to me that really, these tests carry a fifty-fifty chance... in that something terrible is either going to happen or it is not, or you're going to get good news or not. and you have to work out how you're going to go onwards if the horrible things happen. i always thought that was a really interesting perspective. i hope you're okay, alf, this happened to two of my friends, they were in a bad way but everything was fine with both babies.

I don't think thats very high. What midwives don't tell pregnant women is that ALL pregnancies have 1 in a 100 chance of having something happen you didn't plan. Yet thats not high enough to tell anyone.
i think first you have to decide how high that is for you. And then decide how you feel about children with Down's syndrome. Hospitals only give you doom and gloom about life with a disabled child and never mention the positive stories or the fact that children with disabilities are children first and foremost.
An Amnio carries a higher risk of miscarriage i believe that the chances your child has DS.
I can imagine you ae all a-swivet right now
