Son won’t eat

My son is 3 years old we have had our first appointment with paediatrician as we think he is autistic he shows a lot of these signs. The paediatrician agreed on first appointment she feels we may be right but can’t diagnose in one appointment. He used to eat an ok diet which consisted of cereal in the morning either porridge, Weetabix or shreddies. Some snacks at lunch like an oat bar fruit purées or yoghurts. Then a dinner at night I also can’t get him off puréed meals but he can and does eat other snacks that are solids so I know he is capable of eating non puréed food. But for quite a while now he is completely refusing breakfast, is hardly eating any his snacks he once liked and a puréed dinner at night sometimes will only eat half I’ve also noticed he’s starting to turn his nose up and only wants certain dinners now too. All he wants to do is eat packets of crisps. I have told the paediatrician this at the appointment that his diet is terrible and even if I do try the cruel to be kind method and offer only solids or foods he should be eating he will point blank refuse and just won’t eat. Nothings been done about it no referrals for eating etc. she said she would send me out leaflets on diets and children on the spectrum but never received them ( appointment was November) my sons now been dealing with bad constipation over last couple weeks on off and I went to the doctor today to get laxatives as he’s in agony and has been for days now with it. The Dr asked about his diet and I was completely honest that he used to have a half decent diet at least he was eating more than one meal a day and didn’t just want to live of crisps, chocolate, biscuits and yoghurts. He completely blanked what I said and went on to talk about the laxative he was prescribing? has anyone else ever had this kind of situation and what do I do? I’m at my wits end and worried he’s lacking in vital food groups. I genuinely do not know what to do going forward I can’t get him off purées, and now he won’t eat a breakfast. His diet just now consists of, crisps, fruit purées, yoghurts, chocolate buttons, the odd oat bar, oat and raisin bites snacks, and a puréed dinner at night. Nursery also have gave in trying him with there foods and told me just to take snacks in with me for him. Any advice would be great!

Can you try offering the weetabix shreddies etc again?
Try offering food you know he likes - e.g. OK breakfast is weetabix or yoghurt - leave it to him to decide which or how much he eats. Lunch - nursery lunch and 1 of the snacks you know he likes. Dinner - whatever your having plus something you know he likes.

So for us say we are doing spaghetti bolognese I serve the meat sauce in one dish the pasta in a separate one and some form of bread all in the middle of the table.. On a good day my 4 year old might eat a bit of pain pasta and the bread, often right now just the bread. (Pasta and buyter was his favourite go to food 2 months ago now he barely touches it 😖)

You can ask for a referral to a dietician if your worried but the wait is long.. We have been eating 6-8 months already. And our gp took the standpoint of will he looks healthy and full of energy so he is obviously getting enough to do him.

Solid starts on instagram can be helpful.

Might be worth playing with food, might encourage him to taste - diggers in coco pop/ rice krispies, Dinosaurs on weetabix mountains etc

Lots of kids with asd seek a sensory diet and crunchy / dry foods - these foods are predictable. A ritz cracker tastes the same every single time but a strawberry can be sweet, sour, firm, squishy, juicy etc.

Regarding the constipation, if he's having purees can you give him pureed pear, or other fruits good for getting things moving?
I used to give my son pureed pear in his porridge frequently after a tricky bout of constipation.

I've found tinned fruit more successful. It's always the same unlike fresh.

Pears
Peaches
Mandarins

What's he like with drinks? Would he drink a milkshake or a smoothie? Or a fruit juice.

Would he eat an ice lolly? You can make your own using smoothie mix or proper juice.

Also, look-up ARFID and see if that sounds familiar. Looking for advice on this may be more suited to your situation.

Thanks everyone for your messages 😁 I will give your tips/ advice a try. I phoned GP back today and they are chasing up paediatrician and hopefully get a referral to dietician (bowels finally moving though)🫣
