basic questions re nappies

I have been using a nappy laundry service for the past 9 months and have just cancelled it as I was getting lazy and using dispos.
I intend to start using reusables again after Xmas but haven't decided on which ones yet.

  1. Do you have to soak dirty naps in a bin - or can they be popped into the washing machine straight away.
  2. also if I can and they have been pooed on - can they go in with normal items?
  3. which are the best ones for being slimline under clothes - intend to use dispos overnight - so won't need too thick a pad during the day.

Good on you!I'll answer your questions in reverse order!

  1. If slimness is important to you then investigate hemp nappies/rainbow tots bots. Kittykins have some pictures on their site.

2 and 1. When I change LO, I just stick the nappy in the nappy bin if wet. If pooed on I sluice under the loo flush (helps to use a paper liner) and put in bin. I dry pail which means there's no water. Come wash day, I put all the nappies in the machine and run a separate rinse. Then I sort the nappies and wash nappies, liner on 60C generally on their own ( but sometimes add other bits, quite ok to do this) and wraps on 40C with everything else. You can use a nappy mesh (big net bag) to help with both dry/wet pailing. Or you can use a nappy bag if you haven't space for a bin.

Hope that helps, ask away if you have anymore questions!

yes, dry pail and wash with other tems. If you're lazy (like me) you'll find that it's OK to wash wraps at 60 - mine haven't been damaged from it.

But I don't know why you plan to use disposables overnight. When it's awakward to use terries (eg when I'm on holiday) I still use terries at night as I find they leak less than disps (well mine do - they're tots bots).

Also you'd be surprised at what clothes fit over fat nappies. Tots Bots are notoriously bulky (I have read), but both kids can still wear most normal clothes no prob. OK, so I can't always do up the last popper on the sleepsuits, but who's going to know that??

I was going to use dispos overnight as they keep him really dry - the terries were absolutely wringing and heavy when I used them. I don't want to give him any excuse to wake us up in the night!I was going to bring reusables back around the time for potty training.
