My 18mo is a bottomless pit, quite frankly. He's hungry a good hour before mealtimes so I know I need to give him bigger snacks; the question is what!!! I spend enough time cooking as it is!

He eats on average 5-7 portions of fruit/veg a day, so not really looking for more fruit.

Not too keen on rice cakes, but they'll do once or twice a week

Breadsticks are a hit, but can't keep giving them all the time!

He has a nice big yogurt every day with dessicated coconut

Not bothered about melty puffs

Hit me with your snack ideas, fellow mums! Google gives me results like "aged unicorn cheese and strawberry flavoured holy water" so hoping for some realistic input instead of an impossible ideal!

Oat cakes
Sandwiches (make in advance and keep in fridge)

CatOnTheChair · 30/01/2023 13:13

Muffins - sweet and savory. Made in batches, and frozen. Warm in the microwave one at a time.

Sweetcorn fritters, made in advance and frozen.

Crumpets with various toppings. Toast, English muffins, anything else from that bit of the bread aisle.

Pitta bread (and vegetable) slices with a dip to dunk them in.

And quite a lot of cake and biscuits

We had second breakfast in place of first snack quite often - so cereal for one, toast for the other.

My ds loved wholemeal toast with melty butter and jam/marmite/peanut butter/marmalade.

And warm porridge with chopped apple or sultanas.

Crackers and cheese are a big hit here. Or peanut butter and apple (I know you said no more fruit but you could do that with crackers or breadsticks or wholemeal pitta fingers type of thing). Also a babyccino ie. Frothy milk.

I do make things like toddler 'carrot cake' cookies which freeze well and I just pull one out the day I want to offer it.

MrsBigTed · 30/01/2023 13:33

Cheese, or cheese spread on crackers / pitta was a big hit with ds1, or carrot / cucumber / pepper sticks for ds2

Cream cheese on wraps, rolled and cut into to pinwheels. Super-quick, can do with any spread.

Mini frittatas with veg and cheese.

Flapjacks, banana loaf, fingers of buttered hot cross bun.

Cuwins · 30/01/2023 13:42

Dd (11m) has just got into boiled eggs, she also does like the organix oat bars. I have made peanut butter and apple breakfast cookies which would make great filling snacks, puff pastry pin wheels, crackers are popular too.

Treedecsandtinsel · 30/01/2023 13:48

Cheese and courgette muffins (Tesco recipe and they freeze)

mini baked potatoes (bake a load of baby potatoes and keep in fridge. Eat cold or microwave and add cream cheese if you like)

mini pot of left overs from tea?

pasta? Boil some up and then keep in the fridge?

Mine love frozen peas when they are still frozen but I’m not sure that actually a good thing!

Vegetablesupreme · 30/01/2023 14:03

Cheese on toast? My ds used to love this. I'd cut it into fingers (for dipping into ketchup).

Doje · 30/01/2023 14:28

I always had a never ending supply of both quiche and sweet potato 'fries' in the fridge.

Capuchini · 30/01/2023 17:29

Mine daughter is a bit older but she likes dairylea dunkers as a quick and easy snack if you are looking for low prep!

WhiteHorse92 · 31/01/2023 09:31

Have you tried making homemade oat and nut bars? I make them quite a lot and use different nuts, nut butters, seeds and dried fruit each time to change it up. I just make them in a square baking dish then once chilled I cut them into bars and they keep well in the fridge in a tipper ware box.

DragonbornMum · 31/01/2023 12:41

Thanks mums! Lots of good ideas here - should last me a couple of weeks of snacks before he decides he hates everything 🙄🙄🙄

Definitely consider more protein as mentioned, protein tends to make you feel satiated better than carbs. Hard boiled eggs, cooked chicken, peanut butter on something like crackers or toast, hummus with crackers or crudités to dip in, roasted chickpeas as a crunchy option. Or something stodgy like some porridge, a small portion of it served in a mug or small bowl with a tasty topping. An extra cup of milk with whatever other lighter snack.

Heard about some kids enjoying frozen fruit like mini ice lollies, so I know you said you're covered with fruit but serving up a handful of frozen raspberries would take longer to eat than the immediately gone handful of fresh ones.

oceanbleu · 31/01/2023 13:05

Mine likes babybel cheese, or any cheese really. Also likes dates and yoghurt. Sometimes raisins and dried cranberries. Also really likes smoothies which can be filling. And sometimes, in all honesty, a biscuit.

takealettermsjones · 31/01/2023 14:35

Mine absolutely loves the Quorn cocktail sausages and Quorn picnic eggs.

Mashed avocado on toast with grated cheese sprinkled on top.

Mini oat pancakes (1 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup apple. Blend and then fry).

Omelette strips (you can make in microwave if you have a small plastic dish - beat an egg, add ham and cheese, nuke for about 60-90 seconds)
