Newborn Feeding

Hello all,

I’d like to get the view on my newborns feeding habits from the community here.

My newborn DS is 21 days old. In the past few days his appetite has been impossible to satisfy.

We combi feed and he’s largely on the breast during the day and formula for night feeds. Up until recently bottle feeds have satisfied him and he’s been drowsy and near asleep towards the end of the feed and therefore easy to put down for a nap. On the breast it’s slightly different, he required more time to feed and feeds more often which as I understand was completely normal for BF.

Recently his appetite has increased and constantly needs to be on the breast and his bottle feeds are no longer satisfying him.

We’ve had to give him top up feeds meaning in some cases he’s had 90mls/ 3flz in the space of an hour which according to the feeding guidance is too much his weight. But he takes it and keeps it down. And we often have to tip him up with breast afterwards to soothe him otherwise he will not rest/settle.

The problem is, he’s still hungry after this and does not settle like he does after a satisfying feed. And recently if he’s awake and not feeding, he’s crying which is becoming quite stressful. We deffo think he has a touch of colic, but the hunger thing has us puzzled.

Is this too much milk for his age and weight? He’s 7.9lbs.

Any ideas as to why his hungry is so hard to satisfy?

Get some advice from a proper lactation consultant, and consider to stop combi feeding at this young age if you possibly can unless you've already had issues with weight gain. Put him solely to the breast and it's very normal for them to feed feed feed at this stage, it's called cluster feeding, get in bed for skin to skin feeding and stay there feeding, resting and snacking.

Bumping this hoping to get some further insight!

It sounds like cluster feeding which is totally normal, you just need to let it ride out..
I would say the combo feeding is probably making things harder because you don't know how much he's getting in total..
Also, cluster feeding happens when they're going through a growth spurt and telling your body to start making more milk so those signals might be getting confused..
Combo feeding is better to start after six weeks when the breastmilk supply is established

Most of the milk making hormones are made at night. Is there anyway you could swap the bottles for during the day and breast at night?

Have yous thought about reflux? Wee one could be drinking more to stop the pain of reflux
