Stupidity of white polo shirt for infant school children

Been up since 5am despite it being a Sunday and am already on 2nd load of panic washing before Monday morning.

This has sparked intense fury at all my kids uniform consisting of a white polo shirt, despite them all being in infant school still. Who on Earth thought it was a good idea to force 4-7 year olds to wear pure white on a daily basis?? All their shirts bought in Sept are completely trashed and stained. Wouldn’t it be more logical to make the uniform a navy or bottle green shirt?? And is a white shirt standard in most primary schools or is there’s an anomaly??

the school they were at before had light yellow shirts so no better. In fact almost worse as they went discoloured really easily.

refuse to replace shirts as they still fit and we are only in January. School will have to put up with looking at my trampy kids instead. Hopefully they will smell that they are in fact clean 😂

I'm horrified at much bleach people use! It's terrible for the environment. I only use it when we've had diarrhoea, norovirus etc - and then on the toilet, not on clothes!

QuertyGirl · 29/01/2023 10:42

It really doesn't matter if the shirts don't stay immaculate you know.

The whole point of school uniform at this age, is to get destroyed.

Needmorelego · 29/01/2023 10:43

I gave up caring.
It was a stupid uniform (white shirt and tie).
The tie used to get chewed too so always looked manky.
I really just didn't care. If the school wanted the children to look smart they should have chosen something more sensible.

I don’t bleach anything ever. My children have pale coloured polo shirts (not white) and I don’t care that they are stained. They’re freshly washed, that’s all that matters. The school has a room full of second hand uniform that you can go into any time and pay a pound for a second hand polo shirt and most have a stain here and there, who cares, it’s better that they are reused. I have better things to do than worry about stained school uniform.

cutiemcsweetie · 29/01/2023 10:48

My sons were bottle green and trust me , they just find a way to stain them with white or lighter coloured crap somehow 😂

evilharpy · 29/01/2023 10:50

Ours are a bright golden yellow. So much easier than the white ones in our previous school.

AyeCarrumba · 29/01/2023 10:51

Yes it's ridiculous!

FrenchandSaunders · 29/01/2023 10:52

Vanish gets every stain out. The stick to dab the stain then a scoop of the powder in the drawer … whites come out gleaming and stain free. Can’t abide grey whites.

I love plain white school tops. Soak with bleach , rinse, dump in washing machine and everything will come out perfectly clean.

Do you soak in pure bleach?! Doesn't work for our stains!

Me too! I this is all a bit mad. Kids are supposed to be a bit messy

Sugarfree23 · 29/01/2023 11:01

And for whiteboard marker I read that soaking it in milk works, although I've not tried it yet.

I tried and failed with that one, I also tried hairspray, which was also a MN word of wisdom that failed.

I can cope with my youngest looking messy but my oldest who is more messy than the youngest is becoming self conscious about his clothes.

the80sweregreat · 29/01/2023 11:13

Why can't they just want them to wear cheap white t shirts ? The rules over school uniform or PE kit is annoying
Plus the amount that goes missing too!

WellTidy · 29/01/2023 11:18

I can’t understand why primary school children can’t just wear a tracksuit everyday. Means they wouldn’t have to change before and after PE, and far easier for little ones and parents.

berksandbeyond · 29/01/2023 11:19

My 4 year wears a white shirt and tie 4 days a week (polo shirt one day a week on PE day) so I think you should probably count yourself lucky.
I just bought enough uniform that I didn’t have to so frantic washing, is that an option?

rwalker · 29/01/2023 11:22

Sooner have white you can bleach and spot scrub
colours fade and you have to be careful what u use on them

lorisparkle · 29/01/2023 12:20

@WellTidy when my eldest started primary they wore joggers and sweatshirts from reception to year 2. It was amazing how many parents of girls complained. They eventually changed it to reception only. Such a shame as it made so much sense.

BungleandGeorge · 29/01/2023 12:26

the only thing that really ruined ours was the non washable paint they used to use! Food stains etc usually come out or at least fade with a long soak and scrub in stain remover. If they’re that bad I’d just go and get some more from the supermarket

Why did they complain?

I'd love that

lorisparkle · 29/01/2023 12:52

@QuertyGirl because they wanted their girls to wear dresses and skirts.

It’s usually the girls themselves who don’t want to wear trousers..

QuertyGirl · 29/01/2023 13:04

Skirts are less practical.

Never understood why they are part of school uniforms at all.

I'd stick them all in track suits or onesies. Simple, practical, warm and cheap

maryberryslayers · 29/01/2023 13:20

White is the best colour for stain removal. Just soak in water with Ace bleach on Friday night, quick rinse and straight in the wash on Saturday night. I bought a lidded bucket so I don't have to take up a sink.

Needmorelego · 29/01/2023 13:35

The skirt thing is interesting. When my daughter was nursery/reception age a lot of the girls got in a tangle with their skirts when using the toilet.
They were pulling the skirts down (and often taking them off completely) rather than lifting them up.
It was often the first time many were wearing skirts as they had spent the first 3/4 years of their lives in leggings 😂

TheHauntedPencilCase · 29/01/2023 13:55

I always thought this but now mine are in y3 and above its not an issue. At least I could bleach them unlike the sweatshirts which also got covered in pen and paint which never came out. I don't buy new mine just wore stained, no-one cares.

catinboots123 · 29/01/2023 13:58

DS1 had white and DS2 had yellow. Yellow so much easier to keep clean.
