Nappy Leakage!

Hi all.

My baby is 8 weeks tomorrow, but was born 6 weeks premature, so she's still absolutely tiny. She weighs around 6lb 3.

The problem is she was on size 0 nappies since around day 4. They've gotten a little tight now, so I've moved her up to size 1. Much better in the waist.

However, any size nappy I try leaks, especially at night. I've put it down to her legs being quite skinny (think chicken legs!) So there's no proper leg seal. Even the small nappies didn't go around her tiny thighs properly so leaked. I check her and change her at every feed.

I don't know what to do, really. I check her nappies to make sure they're as sealed as possible, but still have this problem. We will be moving to bamboo reusables when she's a bit bigger (and has her pooping in order- whole other story). Does anyone have any advice to stop the leakage?

Which brand are you using? My little boy is 9 weeks today but was 6lbs3 when born and he still has chicken legs. Asda Little Angels nappies fit really well with no leaks

Aldi’s own brand

Or put another nappy on top of the ‘normal’ nappy but the wrong way round

Mine is 6.4lb currently and often has leaks out the side (or even the back?!) of the nappy no matter what we do - frilling out the edges, pointing his penis down etc! I'm using size 1s with various brands. I actually find the fit better with the resuables I'm currently trying than the disposables despite him being small. I'm using the baba+boo newborn resuables, you can adjust the fit to make it tighter and the bamboo inserts seem to hold more wee than the disposables.

Thanks guys! I'm using Mamia I think at the moment (Lidl?) But I think I have some Aldi and asdas knocking around (although I found the size 0 Asda ones to leak, but that might have been sizing).

Night's aren't fun at the moment. With insatiable hunger and wet nappies. Yay!

Try pampers. They're ludicrous, I know. But they don't ever leak IME. Once she's a bit bigger you can change her.
I'm using Amazon brand now for my 5 month old which do seem to hold him even overnight but if we get leaks I'll buy pampers just for overnight.
Congratulations on the new arrival.

I had this problem with DS so have been putting these over his nappy at night. They go down to 2.5kg/5.5lb so would fit your little girl.

Ds was similar. We used the free pampers from Emma’s diary app. They were the only ones that fitted his skinny legs.

Caspianberg · 29/01/2023 07:03

Tots bots teenyfits?
Even if you just buy enough for night time use until they are big enough for other reusables.
Ds was nearly 9lb born, and he still fitted the teenyfits until about 3 months old. They are 5-12lb approximately

SalviaOfficinalis · 29/01/2023 07:12

I do find pampers better… the filling seems to expand more than others somehow which can stop leaks.

We just use them at night and cheap ones in the day.

PeraltaSpidey · 29/01/2023 09:48

Thanks all. I have some pampers that'll I'll save for the nights!! I hope it works. If not I'll invest in some of the underpants. She's a garden hose at the moment

Stupid question, are they sitting in her knicker line? I found with chicken legs you have to really position the nappies right to stop leaks. Squeeze them at the front to bring the knicker line in and tighten round the top.

I never had this issue with my chunky baby but always with my skinny baby!

My eldest had chicken legs - she was long and scrawny, I never had a disposable not leak, so we used washable nappies and had far less washing overall (our clothes, the sofa covers, bedding everything got a hit)
We used mostly terry squares which are really cheap and fitted nappies, and then a waterproof cover over the top we used Imse Vimse wraps which have a huge velcro panel so you can adjust the angle of the tabs to accommodate scrawny legs - and got no leaks

I had a tiny preemie baby! Tesco Fred and Flo brand never leaked for her.
