We had that and it was a blocked tear duct. If the eye is red it could be a sign of conjunctivitis (ie infection) which might need treatment. You can also use breast milk to wash it if breastfeeding.

Blocked tear ducts are really common with babies up till around age 1, just use some cooled boiled water on a cotton pad to wipe it every few hours.

Amazing thank you! I’ve been doing it three hourly with feeds as it’s so so sticky :-( have you ever heard of paronychia?

Only heard of paronychia in context of infected bits around nail bed were the skins been broken. I'm a nail biter.

DD always got a blocked tear duct in one eye whenever she had a cold, there would be runny and crusty yellow bits in the corner of her eye and along the eyelid when it got really bad so her eye would be sticky and hard to open. Keeping it clean did the job and stopped it getting sore.

You can massage the tear duct to help clear the blockage and stimulate the duct. Just under where the inner corner of the eye meets the nose. The first time you may get a bit of gunk out.

Dd2 had a blocked duct and we were under a consultant at the local hospital. She was seen somewhere around 3 months and we were advised to massage regularly and they would review before one in case it needed surgery. It cleared up fine with the massaging.

Mine had this as a newborn and we struggled so much. Got worse at 3 months all swollen and red. When she was around 8-10 months she rolled over during nappy change and landed on the floor. I was all upset but it sorted out the tear duct for good Grin
She's never had the problem since and 15 now.

Yes a gentle squirt of breastmlk and a v light massage with your ring finger will sort it out Smile in a week or two the tear ducts will open up and the blockage will go but the above should help sort it for now! My newborn had the same and this fixed it and it didn't come back.

Thank you guys!! Definitely going to try massaging it, the warm compresses have helped stop the stickiness but still quite thick :-( baby also has an infected nail, I’ve been cleaning with cotton wool and warm water but they reckon it’s from sucking finger! Has anyone else experienced this? It’s all so new anxiety goes through the roof as they’re so tiny!

Hi I just wondered if there was any update?
my DS is 11 months since birth had a blocked tear duct and 2 months ago we had a good month and a half where it was cleared but seems to have come back 😔 cleaning with cool boiled water and massaging but still not going away. Docs said to come back at a year but does anyone have any other ideas to help naturally before having to consider the surgery route?

not sure if reflated at all but he’s suffering with teething. Already has 9 teeth’s through as such a young age and 2 more larger teeth now showing under the gums it must be a coincidence but just want him to not be suffering with his eye anymore

thanks

Hi thank you so much for your reply.
was your LO one before they referred you?
My ds has since had conjunctivitis because of the block and each time they give him drops they just say come back when he is one 😔 x

LGBirmingham · 22/07/2023 07:41

Ds had this, think it took until about 7 months for it to go in both eyes. Are you massaging the duct? It was a while until a doctor told us to do that and it really helped.

Strawberriesandcreammm · 22/07/2023 09:41

No he was a few weeks old, they should deny you a referral to ophthalmology… keep pushing for it :-)
