DS 98th centile 7 months old

My almost 7 month old is at the 98th centile. I’m not worried about this as I know someone has to be there! I just wondered if anyone else had bigger babies and whether they stayed like this or evened out?

it makes me laugh now as through the whole of my pregnancy I was terrified of having a big baby. This was only due to me having bad anxiety over the birth. I ended up going on to have a very quick and natural birth and having a 9 and a half pounder 🤣 even though me and DP were only 6lbs ourselves as babies. It’s funny to look back on now thinking of how worried I was about it all and my fear happened. To be honest I know no matter what they weigh it was always going to be painful but back then I had a really bad anxiety about it all.

The reason I ask is me and DP aren’t big people really. I’m 5’3 and he’s 5ft 10. Average builds. I was 25th centile as a child - not totally sure about DP but I know he wasn’t a big child. Therefore I do wonder why I’ve got such a big baby, he’s very chunky, lots of rolls and long too. Someone said jokingly .. “ does your baby go to the gym he’s solid” 🤣 He’s 98th centile weighing 22lbs - not even 7 months old yet. We’ve had comments like oh he’s going to be a big lad he’s going to be really tall. Not even tall men on either side of family either. Tallest is my dad at just 6ft but everyone else is under this.

I absolutely do love having a chunky baby I wouldn’t change him for the world. He is bloody beautiful (maybe slightly biased) so this isn’t a negative post at all! Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation and if their child evened out or stayed following their charts on a higher centile.

Mine was, weighed 8lb 5 at birth, never came out of 98th percentile. Now 6'6" and about 25st. Me and his dad were nothing special height wise, 5'8" and 5'10".

He's quite happy. Always said 'better to be bigger than average than smaller' which I think is very true, particularly for a guy. He's in his 30s now.

My ds was like this. He was 8lb 8 at birth. He's now (just within the month) turned 13 and is 5ft 7.

Big chunky babies often end up tall and skinny in real life. I was 9.5lb, my 4 siblings were all 7-8. I’m tall and slim now.

Big baby boy mum here. He was 8.9lb born, was always on the 98th centile and is now a very tall 2.5 year old. He’s now on the 75th centile for weight. But still tall.

I’m following this with interest OP.
My now six month old very quickly grew to the 91st centile, despite being only just over 7lb when born.
DH and I are roughly the same height as you and your partner.

I’m breast feeding and struggling to keep weight on, so am wondering if that might be something to do with it. My antenatal class friends have joked that I must be producing top notch milk!

Ah well I’m not breast feeding. I got told formula fed end up being a little bigger not how true it is! So yes sounds like you are producing some good milk

Yes both my girls are 98th centile, much taller than many peers. And I am 5’5 and DH 5’8 so not especially tall. I am assuming that they are growing like me - I’m not sure of my height as a baby/toddler, but I reached my adult height quickly and was tallest in the class through primary school, then just stopped! It took me a while to acclimatise to not being a tall person.

Speaking of BF role in it, I had oversupply and could have fed 5 babies at the start, poor things I used to say it was like fois gras! So I always wondered if that played a part too.

DS was 9lbs9 born. 99th centile throughout. He's just 12 and 5ft5, quite lanky looking. Likely to be well over 6ft if going by all the other men in our families!

Ashara · 28/01/2023 16:48

My DS (now 15.5) was 9lb 13 at birth, on 98th centile the whole time. I’m 5’3 and DH 5’10. DS is now totally average, about 5’8 and slim. Nowhere near the biggest/tallest in his year.

Bagofweasels · 28/01/2023 16:55

My 2nd DD was 8lb at birth but by 6 mth (breastfed) was the fattest baby I’ve ever seen in my life, all rolls, super cute and squishy but I was worried whether she would ever stretch! 🙈 she’s 7 now and a skinny minnie, it just gradually came off as she grew. She is a much smaller build now than my other DD who was never a chubby baby despite feeding them exactly the same.

VivaVivaa · 28/01/2023 17:01

DS was pretty small when he was born - 6lb6. By 6 months he was on the 98th centile for weight and has mostly stayed there since (he’s now 3, and roughly 91st centile for weight and 75th for height). He was exclusively breastfed. He was a humongous blob of a baby, honestly he looked like he could eat my friends tiny little girl of the same age. He’s still a solid toddler but doesn’t like huge like he used to. He gets lots of exercise and eats well so I’m not concerned currently - we’re just monitoring it.

Moneypanicker · 28/01/2023 17:01

It depends what centile they were born on. If breastfed it doesn't matter how many centiles they go up if formula fed it does. If he was born on 98th centile then he is just following trend. Maybe you have big babies? Did you have gestational diabetes?

Moneypanicker · 28/01/2023 17:03

Should have clarified 98th centile for height or weight?

VivaVivaa · 28/01/2023 17:03

To add to my post, my husband and his brothers grew in an identical way. They were all rolls upon rolls of fat as babies. They are all now tall and skinny, none of them are below 6ft. They were all EBF as well.

Yes he was born around the same centile. He was 9lbs 8. Maybe I just do have bigger babies! Just seems strange as we were only little babies ourselves (me and DP). Nope I didn’t have gestational diabetes, I was measuring on the bigger side but didn’t think he was going to come out that big 😂

Weight! I’ve not measured him for height for ages. The HV did once and I think he was like 75th for height. He is fairly long too though but it was weight I was meaning

My eldest DS was 98th centile. I even had regular visits from the health visitor who thought I was over feeding him. I now have a very slim, very fit 10 year old.

SamanthaVimes · 29/01/2023 09:06

DD was born 6lb13 so fairly petite. By 6 months she was so fat! A proper little Michelin man and about 21lbs.

Then once she started moving she’s slimmed back out again. Not sure of her weight now but she’s a fairly petite 2.5yo now (who still moves non stop)

AlwaysLatte · 29/01/2023 09:09

My 14 year old was 98th, a very chunky (and tall) baby and now he is 6ft 2 and slim but not skinny (he is very sporty).

Coddfish · 29/01/2023 09:26

my babies were all big but my eldest who was 8lb13oz at birth by 4 months was 99.9th centile. Amongst our baby group she looked about 6 months older than the other babies! She was fully breast fed but I think the health visitors thought I was feeding her chips and pizza on the side. They made me quite worried but then my mum said I’d been big too (bottle fed) and managed to dig out my own weight card from the 80s. when I plotted my own baby weights in my daughters red book I was so fat I was actually way over the 100th centile landing firmly in the realm of impossibility! So I stopped worrying as I am a slim adult!
My daughter was gorgeously chubby until about age 4 but then just grew upwards and is now tall (5’6) but a size 8 and on the NHS online height weight tracker she’s 13th centile. So basically don’t worry, feed healthily and it all balances out in the end!
