Best head lice treatment

My 3 year old hates having her hair combed and also has lice.
I've tried full marks, but the combing was disastrous. I've just gone over her hair now whilst she's asleep and found lots more eggs.
Does anyone know which treatment will kill the eggs without combing?

We tried so many products when I was a kid, but my mum cracked it with this:
Tea tree and neem oil mixed into conditioner. Leave in for half an hour to an hour (under a towel) and rinse out, watch the little blighters go down the drain. Repeat after 3 days but you won't get much. Then a third go few days after that, probably won't see anything.

We used nitwits last time. Nice and easy.

I found Vamousse was the best - they say it kills lice and eggs within 15mins. But you have to do the combing, whatever treatment you use.

Yep nitwits definitely- from Amazon!

You need to comb with all of them in my experience because you need to remove the eggs and live lice.

How far down the bribery route have you gone? I usually find letting DD watch the most annoying show on YouTube, or buying her a new pack on Toca World along with a bar of chocolate does the trick.

Unfortunately the combing is essential - but a nitty gritty comb and not just the cheap plastic ones. Loads of Conditioner and comb through.

the only treatment that works to kill them is the overnight or eight hour one. The others just don’t work in my experience.

My autistic dd hates having her hair brushed at the best of times so you have my sympathy but it needs daily combing. We comb every Sunday now to check!

Is combing essential because nothing can kill the eggs? I read that a couple of them kill the eggs as well, is there any real truth to that?
Bribery only works so well, she hates having her hair brushed and it's a nightmare to do it every morning as it is

You do a second treatment after most eggs have hatched but before they can breed again. Then a third just to make sure. No combing with my method.

Yes, if you really can't comb the eggs out then you can re-treat after a week to kill any hatched eggs before they can breed.

Blow-dry! Heat kills the eggs – dries them out.

Fry the bastards with a hair straightener. Tell her she's getting pretty, shishy hair.

We tried all the home treatments. We combed and condition and used vinegar and all sorts. I finally caved and bought one of the proper treatments. Can't remember the brand but it's the one that basically smothers them. I did use the comb to follow up but only to remove the eggs and dead lice. Could have got away without combing for sure. Just make sure to do a follow up treatment the following week.

Tips for combing are definitely bribery related. Sweets, tv, anything to keep them entertained.

Nitwits was the only product that worked for us but it’s not easy to get hold of.

Try using tea tree shampoo and conditioner after it's done, pretty sure that stopped our kids from getting it even though their BFs all did regularly

Thanks everyone. I didn't realise the lice would need about a week to be ready to lay more eggs, so if any eggs remain after tonight and we treat again next week, then we should kill those before they are able to lay any more eggs - is that right?
When they are nymphs - are they also killed by the lice treatment? Does anyone know?
Thanks for the suggestions of tea tree - will absolutely use that as a preventative option once this is dealt with.
I feel awful, she had about twenty dead lice in the sink after I was done combing and loads of eggs - she must have had them for ages and I didn't know! I don't even know how they hid from me - her hair isn't that thick (although very curly). She hates brushing it though so I'm often brushing fast and into a pony tail. She's desperate for me to cut it and I'm tempted to agree (she's only three so I'm worried she will be upset if we actually cut it all off, but every time we go to the hairdresser for a trim she asks for more off).

  1. Mix together one cup oil and one cup white vinegar. 2. Pour mixture onto the hair and scalp.

We recently cleared DS of a proper head full using the boots equivalent of the lice treatment that kills and smothers them. Put it on, left it for an hour then combed through very thoroughly. Combed again every other day then repeated the treatment a week later to get any that hatched in between. No sign since.

Should say - for the combings in between we covered his head in a heavy layer of conditioner to help the comb go through and the eggs slide away.
