How to ditch the dummy?!

Mmmmamma · 27/01/2023 20:28

DS is 13mo, he has liked a dummy more and more as he’s gotten older and I wish I wouldn’t have introduced it

but now he’ll wake briefly (very brief like seconds) grab it put it back in and go to sleep. He does use it to sleep

hes never slept through and gets in our bed pretty much every night now. I am working on getting him to stay in his cot but next is the dummy gone

how do I do this??? I’m more worried as time goes on and he still likes it

I only let mine have it in the cot once they could move themselves about well. Then one day I just got rid of it and dealt with the fallout for a couple of nights.

Following! My son is nearly 13 months and he sleeps well but uses the dummy. Worried about how he'll sleep if I take it away!

I took it away aged 2 by chopping the teats off and saying it was broken. She was old enough to understand by then.

No need to worry about it now. If it lives in his bed then it won’t affect speech and teeth. Do the dummy fairy, give it to Santa, new baby, whatever, when he’s old enough to understand so probably 2.5-3. When he’s only 13 months and has no idea why you’ve taken his source of comfort it seems unduly harsh and unnecessarily disruptive.

@FlounderingFruitcake yeah I’ve thought this I don’t want him to be upset and confused by it :(

I guess there’s no easy way until he’s a bit older I hoped there was

I used some of that stuff you can buy to stop nail biting, to make it taste horrible.

People may think it's unkind but DS is a fully adjusted adult who thinks it's funny.

Wait til they move into a big bed (out of the cot) and explain that when you make the move to the big boy bed the sunny has to go.
That's what we did with DS and he completely fell for it!
