Toddler Hearing Aids

My daughter had hearing aids this week, she's a very small two year old with a genetic condition. One feature of the condition is that she has quite flappy ears with little depth, keeping the hearing aids in is exhausting. DD is very good with them and seems to find them helpful but one wrong flick of her hand or putting her toy phone beside her ear and they're out. I've spent the week hunting car parks for them 🙈 we've tried toupee tape and new moulds have been taken because these are now slightly off but I'm so panicky that I'm going to lose one (or both) any tips?

Audiology were helpful but did accept that her ear shape makes it hard for them to stay in and beyond toupee tape no further advice.

You can get clips for them that attach to the back of tops etc that's what we use. we get ours from an online shop called connevans. I think it's called a safety line or something?

Or retention cord. You can get them on Etsy too

Amazing thank you, I wondered if there was something similar to like a glasses chain. I'll order one of those and hope that the new moulds fit better.

Hi Pumpkindart! Just wanted to second Connevans as a provider. They’re so lovely. Their customer service team are very friendly and helpful and will explain things to you thoughtful if you’re unsure about anything.

You can get little head bands with pockets in them for the hearing aids. Some of my littlies have used these and parents have found them helpful( I am a ToD!)

It sounds like you're facing a challenging situation, but it's great to hear that your daughter is adapting well to the hearing aids and finding them helpful. Here are some tips that might be helpful in keeping the hearing aids in place:

Consider a different type of hearing aid: Depending on your daughter's specific needs and hearing loss, there may be alternative types of hearing aids that could work better for her. For example, there are bone conduction hearing aids that don't need to sit inside the ear, or smaller, more secure in-ear hearing aids that might fit her ears better.

Try different ear molds: It sounds like you've already explored this option, but it may be worth continuing to work with the audiologist to find the best-fitting ear molds. They may need to make adjustments to the shape or size to help the hearing aids stay in place more securely.

Consider a headband or clips: You could try using a headband or clips to help keep the hearing aids in place. Some hearing aid manufacturers make accessories that can be attached to the hearing aids to help secure them, such as clips that attach to clothing or headbands that go around the head.

Use a wig tape or similar adhesive: Toupee tape is a good start, but you may want to try other types of adhesive as well. Wig tape is a strong, double-sided tape that can be used to attach the hearing aids to the skin behind the ears. Just make sure to test the tape on a small area of skin first to ensure that your daughter doesn't have a reaction to it.

Talk to other parents: Reach out to parent groups or online forums for parents of children with similar conditions. They may have additional tips or tricks for keeping hearing aids in place that have worked for them.

Remember to be patient with yourself and your daughter during this process. It may take some trial and error to find the right solution, but with perseverance and support, you'll find a solution that works for your family.
