Help! Treating head lice when child is resistant!

My boy (4.5) is on the waiting list for an autism assessment. He had head lice about 6 months ago and I treated it fairly stress free - but he really didn’t like the combing. He has it again now - a nursery mum warned me her child had it - and I’ve just spotted the eggs. I’ve just tried to talk to him about it and start combing but he is really resisting it. Very upset, crying, running away, hitting.

like the last time I have the Hedrin leave-in 8hr shampoo (more like oil) and he really won’t let me near him with it.

husband is fantastic in general but this is one thing he just struggles to deal with.

I really need to treat it today so he can go to nursery tomorrow - this is his fourth ailment in 3 weeks (tonsillitis then hand foot and mouth then a sickness bug) and if I take anymore time off work (self-employed) I’ll either lose a client or my cash flow will be stuffed!

Has anyone had similar struggles with this and do you have any tips on how to approach it?

And is there a different product I can try - like a simple shampoo that I leave in for 10 mins and rinse out!?

Could you pop him in the bath and rub the Hendrin on instead of shampoo?

Also have a look at the Hendrin website as there’s spray and go treatments that might be easier to get onto him if he won’t sit still.

We just used a nitty gritty comb (expensive but worth every penny) and conditioner and if you slather enough conditioner on it’s pretty easy. Gave up on treatments.

iPad, lots of treats and making sure there are no tangles before you start with the comb. I also made sure I used a 'nitty gritty' which was great for capturing eggs and lice in all stages.

My daughter is autistic and has Afro hair so getting rid of lice at nursery age was utterly painful (for both of us). I didn't use the lice sprays etc. just a really thick conditioner and combed every few days for about six weeks!

If he is finding it really too much you could consider cutting his hat so that there is a lot less to comb. After that using natural sorays on nursery days will deter lice from settling. I made a gentle spray with tea tree oil and lavender oil- test for allergies first.
