Navigating independence and boundaries

My eldest is 9, 10 in March.

He is pushing for more and more independence and I find myself in the change period of his next stage of development.

How do you cope with this as a parent?

I'm finding it very anxiety inducing.

He does not have a mobile phone yet.

So far he is;

  • Going to the (two doors away) local shop.
  • Going out for 30 minutes at a time to the local park on his bike (100ft away)
  • Staying home alone for 10 minutes on Tuesdays when I drop off and collect his brother from beavers.

He wants to;

  • Cycle to and from school (1.2 miles away 10 minute cycle)
  • Go out for longer periods away from the house on his bike.

He has very recently completed Bikeability with school which is making him feel more confident with this (this is of course, great)

I feel what he is currently doing is enough. I feel he is currently to young for a mobile and we live in a busy suburban area.

I am questioning myself because from about 6 I was out and about completely alone wandering wherever I pleased.

I don't feel it's right but I was fine.

I should trust my gut feeling shouldn't I.
