Is this dress offensive?

This dress was bought in America 20 years ago. It's a Disney Small World dress that depicts differing nationalities. It's age 2-3.

Someone said they didn't think it's very PC so I just want to check. I'm happy to be told either way.

I wouldn't think twice. It's a beautiful piece of clothing.

ZenNudist · 20/01/2023 17:50

It's fine

Dontlistitonfacebook · 20/01/2023 17:50

Yes it is. So is the small world ride and much of Disney, imho.

If I'm honest, I wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been pointed out. When wearing it, I wouldn't be looking that closely at the features on a child's clothes ffs.

How priviliged you must be to be able to ignore racist imagery, presumably because it doesn't depict your background in a derogatory way.

Confused
Supertatato · 20/01/2023 17:52

Do the people who think it's fine also think that gollies are OK? Just curious

monsteramunch · 20/01/2023 17:52

@Bpdqueen

But I didn't tell her to get rid of the dog because I don't get to dictate what others do

And nobody has dictated what Op should do. They've said what they would do based on whether or not they find it offensive. You know, because she started a thread asking if it was offensive.

Nobody has gone into her home uninvited, nicked the dress and set it on fire. Who is dictating anything to her? They're answering her question, in their opinion.

People are disappointed that despite people actively explaining why they (as people of the race(s) being depicted) find it offensive, you've dismissed their opinions.

Other PPs have had the good grace to say they didn't find it offensive at all but having read through people's responses, can understand why other people do find it offensive.

The way you converse is unnecessarily combative. I presume people have to extend additional courtesy / consideration to you at times due to your diagnosis (presuming your name is based on that) so it's extra disappointing you don't seem willing to do the same for other people who have difficulties you may not experience.

CandlelightGlow · 20/01/2023 17:52

"Non white people did a racism to me as a child so now I think any other racisms are fine"

Cool I guess?

@Cheesetoastiesz sell on Vinted tbh, pass on to friend, charity shop or bin of raggy.

Could you drop it off at a clothing recycling bin? We have one at our local tip and it's useful for items that aren't suitable for donation to charity.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 20/01/2023 17:53

It's a beautiful dress for a little girl.

in which case, you were a racist child.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 20/01/2023 17:55

also, none of the eyes are authentic. I've never met anyone with black dots for eyes.

It's a drawing, it's simplified. For children. And that is the easiest, most simple way to draw eyes for someone of that nationality. I don't see the issue, grow up everyone being offended 🤣

I did have Golly badges when I was little. 3 tokens and a 50p piece and it was all very exciting. I actually binned them years ago.

Genuinely cringing for you.

That's extremely disablist of you

@Bpdqueen

It wasn't about somebody else's life it was about my life

But people posting on a thread someone else started, literally answering a question the OP actively asked, should 'mind their own business'? Make it make sense.

I mean, it’s only “a simple way to draw eyes for someone of that nationality” if you’ve never seen an East Asian person in real life or on TV, or in a photo. Why not dots like everyone else?

Also, trust me, the ones seeing the problem here aren’t the ones who need to grow.

FrownedUpon · 20/01/2023 17:59

It’s absolutely fine. I can’t believe anyone could be offended by a 2 year olds dress.

YPipoY · 20/01/2023 17:59

@CandlelightGlow Thank you so much for your long post. I also wish people would just admit they don’t care about anything that hurts other people but not them. I would go further and say that I think those with a triumphant, self-congratulatory tone even enjoy it a bit.

Years ago I watched a very long film about the Holocaust called Shoah. It was so long you had to bring your ticket back for a second night. Nine hours long, if I recall correctly. The one line I can’t forget from that nine hours was from a farmer whose fields were crossed by trains of wailing men, women, and children destined for a death camp. The farmer quite jovially recounted how they begged for water and cried out in pain and anguish. When the interviewer asked why it didn’t bother him to hear and see them suffering, he said, “When you cut yourself, I don’t bleed.” A perfect motto for so many Mumsnetters.

Have you really read the posts where people have eloquently explained why they find this hurtful as people of the races depicted and then told them to 'grow up' and laughed at them?

I hope that your message is based on ignorance and you not reading people's posts rather than you reading them and still posting that.

anyolddinosaur · 20/01/2023 18:00

People are far too easily offended. It's a kiddie's dress, no-one should be focusing that closely on the images on it.

BewareTheLibrarians · 20/01/2023 18:01

@monsteramunch these people don’t read posts 😁

Out of interest, what would be a non-offensive way to draw Japanese eyes?

Good question. The depiction of Western eyes is not offensive in itself, so why is the depiction of Asian eyes offensive?

Is the offendee assuming that Asian eyes are bad? If not, why is depicting them bad??

Hadjab · 20/01/2023 18:02

The fringing is offensive...
