Toddler sick and due any day

I’m 9 months pregnant and expecting to go into labour soon.

My toddler is really poorly, high fever, cough, cold, miserable. Flu like.

Im so scared. I don’t want to leave her when she’s sick when I have to give birth. I also don’t want to bring a newborn home to a fluey toddler.

I know realistically there’s not much I can do. Anyone ever experienced this? Should I keep baby and toddler separate if dd2 comes soon?

Hi Op, oh I really feel for you! Best case scenario is maybe baby can hold on another few days and by that point your toddler will be on the right side of their virus. But I know it doesn’t always work like this. Do you have family close by that you plan to leave your toddler with when you go into labour?

I wasn’t exactly the same as you but we had a similar situation last June. My DS was born and we had brought him home one day, two days later my DD broke out in chicken pox. I was a nervous, hormonal wreck. We tried to encourage DD to keep a distance from DS but at the same time I was conscious that I didn’t want to make DD feel like she wasn’t allowed near him. It was hard.

I really hope your toddler is on the right side of this before you have baby so you can focus on yourself and new baby rather than worrying too much about illnesses. If that’s not the case and your toddler is still ill, I really do think that it would be best if you can keep your toddler out of the house for an extra day or so with family to try to minimise the risk of baby catching flu and to reduce the stress of ‘forcefully’ keeping them apart. Then when they do meet each other, you can just enjoy it rather than worry about it.

The only great thing with a newborn is they do have lots of immunity from you, though, so they are more resilient than you think , particularly for the first month!

good luck!
