Sterilising dummies, spoons etc 6 months

Do you have to sterilise dummies once baby is 6months ?

I have a cold Milton sterliser so usually I have a handful in there for when I need them so it's no hassle carry on doing that as obviously they still need cleaning with hot water and washing up liquid - just wondering

Also things like weaning spoons and bowls/plates etc ?

Just started wearing and usually run the spoon under boiled water for a min or two and I do same with the food that's going in the bowl but don't know if I'm being too careful?

3 kids - never sterilised anything. Just a good wash with soap and hot water is sufficient.

JuneWind · 19/01/2023 19:23

I wouldn’t bother. Make sure it’s clean but I don’t think sterile is necessary. DS is 5 months and is constantly shoving his grubby hands among other things into his mouth!

MGee123 · 19/01/2023 19:29

Honestly, after 6 months I stopped sterilising anything. Hot water and washing up liquid is fine.

Never sterilised spoons, bowls, etc (DS never took to a dummy) but I carried on sterilising his bottles still after 6 months as there's usually lots of nooks and crannies in them for it to sit and harbour bacteria, but once he switched to cups, just gave them a good soak in hot soapy water every night.

strawberrysummer19 · 19/01/2023 20:12

Ah ok brilliant thank you! Saves one job I guess
Just constantly boiling water and cleaning stuff getting a bit tedious when trying to cook / prepare other meals

Think I'll carry on with the bottles only x

I've only ever sterilised the bottles, that's it

Batbatbatty · 19/01/2023 20:35

The only things I have ever, ever sterilised are nipple shields, which I boiled a few times in the first weeks and then gave up on that anyway. Mine is EBF so no bottles, but probably wouldn't sterilise those either tbh.

Just wash his teething rings etc now and then.
Just started weaning but won't be doing more than washing his bowls, spoons etc with hit soapy water.

PeppermintChoc · 19/01/2023 20:36

I didn’t. I do have a dishwasher and decided that was sufficient.

23mum · 19/01/2023 20:36

I also just use hot water

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/01/2023 20:37

Mine was licking the dog at that age so no.

Would never have crossed my mind to do this! My DC both happily snack on food they’ve dropped on the (relatively clean) floor. Can’t stop them! Young kids are gross. I just tell myself it’s good for their immune system.

gogohmm · 19/01/2023 20:57

Never sterilised spoons, straight in the dishwasher

Soubriquet · 19/01/2023 20:58

I never sterilised anything apart from baby bottles and teats. Every thing else was just washed normally. That includes, plates, spoons, cutlery, cups and dummies

chineapplepunks · 19/01/2023 21:01

I steriliser bottles in a cold water steriliser but that's mainly because it's a convenient place to store them! DD is 8 months.

But my baby is too young to snack on food from the floor as she's inky 5.5 months

Yeah sure when she is older but I've been sterilising since birth and was wondering when to stop!

Once they're crawling, there's pretty much no point in bothering. They'll be licking and chewing everything at that stage.

Fizzybubblegumbottles · 20/01/2023 06:43

My baby is 6.5 months and starting weaning a couple of weeks ago. We use mam bottles and dummies so can be sterilised in the microwave so I still do them but don’t do spoons/bowls/sippy cup they just get washed with washing up liquid and water.

Yeah that's true but at 5.5 she isn't even moving yet

Cyclistmumgrandma · 20/01/2023 07:36

When my first child was born I was told by the paediatrician not to sterilise anything unless it was to be used to store milk, just to wash with detergent and hot water. "Your baby doesn't live in a sterile world Mrs Cyclist and he needs to build up some immunity"
