How to help a would-be school refuser

DD is struggling with year 7, and this term has greatly ramped up her reluctance to go to school. This week I spoke to the school and they have been totally wonderful.

As this goes on, though, I welcome any and all ideas about how to help DD (and myself, if I'm honest).

Thank you in advance.

So why? What's she said is the issue.

So why? What's she said is the issue.

She has always struggled with friendships and doesn't really seem to have anybody to safely greet her when she arrives. Two or three girls have drifted into the picture and drifted out.
She also has had a couple of boys being unkind in class: one twice complained aloud about being sat next to her. Last term another boy did silly things but designed to get her in trouble.

She has support from the school's wonderful emotional/social support team. And that has stepped up this week. But I don't want to only rely on you them.

@smileladiesplease thank you for replying. Hopefully my reply will help other readers/posters.

Her actual words this week were "Everybody hates me." (Cue knife ripping me apart.)

Does she do any clubs in or out of school? What are her interests?

scarecrow22 · 20/01/2023 12:52

She does a club in school. It seems friendly enough and yesterday she walked home with a girl from it that I know she likes. Annoyingly club seems to be cancelled 1/3 weeks.

She swims, does Scouts and a martial art, plus musical theatre (bankruptcy to try and expand horizons). She seems to get on with some Scouts and a couple of people at drama. But she still thinks nobody ever likes her and is convinced she's rubbish at everything (unfortunately she was at the wrong end of some unkind girls at primary school who achieved that...)

She's unusual and creative and empathetic and kind. She also suffered trauma when she as five. And I'm convinced she has ADD, which is being investigated.....

I also do martial arts. Might be worth having a word with her instructor; they are well used to this. My MA school gives out achievement badges for things the kids have done at school/other activities; swimming awards, star of the week etc. Might give her a confidence boost?
