Hi all my child is 2 and a half, he has no interest in sitting on the toilet himself though is fadcinated when I go. He says things like 'i need a clean nappy' i ask him if he needs the toilet, always a no. Anyway just wondering what others were like/the age I am so tired of nappies now.

27 months (girl) and 33 months (boy). They can go from not ready to ready quite fast, you won’t necessarily see it coming until it’s here.

blueberrymojito · 17/01/2023 10:18

He may not be ready yet. Or he may not know what "do you need the toilet?" means? Does he tell you when he's doing a poo or a wee? It's good that he can recognise he needs a clean nappy.

Put him in pants and take him to the toilet/potty every half an hour for the first day or so initially. Stay at home so he can get the hang of it. Don't revert back to nappies during the day as this will confuse him. Lots and lots of praise if he does anything on there. Don't make a fuss if he has an accident. Just try it and see how it goes and if it stresses him out leave it and try again in a few months.

To answer your question, I've just toilet trained my 2.5 year old. Took 2 days, he'd never done a wee on the potty or toilet before this and if I asked him if he needed the toilet I'm pretty sure he'd have looked at me like I had two heads!

DD1 was 2.5. DD2 was 20 months. DS is 4 and we’re still working on it (he’s autistic).

Both of my boys were 3 by the time they were fully trained

Iamblossom · 17/01/2023 10:20

Both my boys were 2 although ds2 took much longer to be dry at night.

I used to sit them on the potty in front of their fave TV show and go mental with praise and sweets if they did anything on it.

We’re just coming out the other side of potty training on what feels like the later side compared to all the other kids we know. She just wasn’t ready until now. She mastered going for a pee just after her 3rd birthday and 4 months later she started using the toilet for a poo as well. I don’t think the NHS recommends it but she’s so motivated by a treat, she got a tiny wee sweetie every time she went. No nappies, daytime cotton pants and incentivising her worked for us!

If i was store manager i'd give a heads up to the security guard and ask them to leave don't think it needs to be more complicated than this. They would swiftly get the message

My little boy turned 3 last month and still has no idea when he needs to go. We've given up. Planning to try again with potty training in the summer.

Shivermytimber · 17/01/2023 10:32

DS was nearly 4 and still has regular accidents, tried multiple times prior to this and was just not ready.
DD was 16 months, saw a friends child use the potty, took off her nappy and never looked back. She had about 3 accidents in total.
its all about when the child is ready, age means very little.
Good luck.

Demonto · 17/01/2023 10:33

22m (DC1) and 25m (DC2), tried second at same age as first and wasn't ready. they didn't have too strong opinions at that age!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/01/2023 10:35

3 years and 4 months but dry at night very soon after. I tried before she was ready and she ended up withholding poo and getting quite constipated for a long time so take your time with it.

sillybillyboo1 · 17/01/2023 10:43

I don't have a potty but a seat to put him onto i dont want to sit him on it. I suppose he decides when he wants to try it but he would defnitely object to it now.

It might be worth having a potty around for the initial phase. They can be scared to sit high up on the toilet but may need be able to express this

Eixample · 17/01/2023 10:49

May not be able…

olderthanyouthink · 17/01/2023 10:54

16/17 months for DD and DS is 17 months and getting there. I take the low and steady approach though, not get it done in a week.

DS 3.5, about another 6 months to be dry at night.
DD 2.4 day and night at the same time.

FlounderingFruitcake · 17/01/2023 11:02

Almost 3 for DC1, 21 months for DC2. The youngest was so much easier! Granted he took a bit longer to understand what was being asked but there was no battle of wills, he never said no, he hadn’t yet developed a bladder of steel that meant he could hold all day to prove a point, no trying to exploit a bribery situation by letting out tiny drops at a time etc. He’s 2 next month and the last few nights have been dry too.

unclebuck · 17/01/2023 11:07

DS 20month, DD 17 months
I used washable nappies and they both protested and wanted to use the toilet so I went with it. I did day and night at the same time.

Fixesplease · 17/01/2023 11:10

We done a Summer of ' no nappy' with the potty with is all the time, he wasn't interested at all (2.5) at that point.
All very stressed so we gave up to reset us until he just turned 3. Done and reliably dry with in a fortnight.

CoalCraft · 17/01/2023 12:54

DD is 25 months and has cracked it completely at home but still has accidents at nursery so we're nearly there but not quite. Hopefully I'll soon be saying "26 months."

AmySma1 · 17/01/2023 13:12

DD1 was 3 years 5 months we tried at 24 months but that was too soon and it massively knocked her back.

DD2 just turned 4 and is still in them although we know of a slight physical issue affecting her.

DD3 just trained at 2 and a half and mastered it in less than a week

hayls89 · 17/01/2023 13:19

A month after turning 3 😃

BunchHarman · 17/01/2023 14:41

Boy, 25 months.

mondaytosunday · 17/01/2023 14:43

About 24 months for my daughter, 30 months my son. He was dry and clean within a few days and overnight within two weeks. My daughter did that holding in to her wee a bit in the mornings but it didn't take long with her either. Once nappies were off I didn't put them back on.
