Double pram-what to do?! Newborn and 2 yr old

Shleepymummy · 16/01/2023 17:58

I have a newborn due in May and my first child will be 2 years old in May. Thinking we are going to need a double pram. Quite an added cost and we have such a good current single pushchair! Any recommendations for double buggy? Did parents of 2 young children find it a must? Would a baby carrier for newborn work whilst pushing toddler in our current pushchair? Or no, a double buggy is the best way forward? Any thoughts/advice/recommendations greatly appreciated!

My eldest was a late and very reluctant walker, so a 2 year age gap meant a double buggy was a must. The best we had when they were older was a Phil n Teds but for a newborn & 2 year old I had an icandy pear so they could both rear face. We bought second hand to save ££££.

At the time the bugaboo donkey was only just out, so no second hand bargains, but if money had been no object that’s what I’d have got to have them side by side & rear facing.

Our age gap was 20 months and we managed with a buggy board. They grow soo quickly!

I have a double. I don't particularly walk a lot but it's still been used loads. We got it after a day out where we thought the 2 year old would be fine walking around and it turned into an absolute day from hell. I got it second hand off Facebook Marketplace for £200. It's the icandy peach and can be used as just a single too when I only have one of them, the car seat goes on it too so it's great for the school run when the baby has fallen asleep in the car and I don't want to wake him up.

I had an out and about and I loved it. I looked on market place and bought a second hand carrycot for the newborn stage and then sold it on. I would walk miles with them as it was so light and easy to push. I liked it even more than my single.

Same age gap. Second is 5 months and I haven't got a double. Youngest in a carrier and eldest in buggie. Or sometimes my eldest walks and I put baby in the buggie for a bit. Or sometimes I even put eldest in the carrier while baby goes in the buggie 😅. I may get a buggie board soon. But have found what we're doing works well. We walk a lot and baby is 99th centile but carrier still does its job!

25 month age gap here. Baby in sling/carrier and toddler in pram. Baby now 9 months and haven't missed having a double at all. Keep thinking about a buggy board but haven't got round to it yet.

You know your toddler best though. Mine likes to walk, is fairly predictable if walking, had stopped napping by time baby came etc. Baby is another koala like big sister so loves being carried.

Another 20 month gap and a Phil and Teds. We lived in quite a touristy place and I used to catch Chinese tourists pointing it out and sometimes taking photos 😄

trilbydoll · 16/01/2023 20:42

I would add that "managing" with a sling or buggy board when you're already sleep deprived and juggling a baby and a toddler might be the final straw between leaving the house and deciding it is too much hassle.

I used to have dd2 in a pushchair and carry 2.5yo dd1 on my back but that was 9 months in, when I was not quite so exhausted (and apparently super strong). In those early days sometimes I just needed them to both sleep in the pushchair so I could sit in Starbucks.

Same age gap. Out n about nipper double with the carrycot attachment.was amazing. Still using it as a double a year later.

Glides over everything and I can push one handed over the toughest terrain

Fits in the back of our fiesta and I haven't had a door I can't get through yet

MaverickSnoopy · 16/01/2023 20:46

I got the Uppababy Vista. It was a total game changer. If you get it second hand make sure it's the one where both seats face both ways, I think it's the 2016+ model.

Fantastic as a double as you can position the seats in and combination. You can use it as a single too. I had the piggyback board which was so sturdy and I loved because you could go up and down curbs with a child on with such ease. I used I when i was childminding and often used it for 3 children at a time!

motleymop · 16/01/2023 20:54

I had exactly the same debate. My almost 2 year old is currently hopeless at walking anywhere though (not that she can't, she just won't at the moment!). She is also highly unpredictable and will suddenly dart off at an angle when my head is turned.

As a previous poster said, I also wonder how much of a hassle it will be to lift the 2 year old into the pram/onto swings etc with baby in a carrier.

I found a really good deal on an icandy peach on marketplace and bought the converter kit to turn it into a double.

I had 2 years 9 months between my eldest two and the double out n about was a lifesaver. It was worth every cent. It was far easier to put them both into the buggy and stroll to the park or shops than getting everyone in and out of the car. I also still had my uppababy with the buggy board that I could use but I found the double invaluable.

Hohoholdon · 17/01/2023 12:05

It can be really handy for reasons other than just both having them strapped in while you’re walking

  • both napping at same time
  • changing babies nappy in the park, baby lying down in buggy, toddler safely strapped in
  • BF baby, toddler safely strapped in
sometimes I’d be pushing an empty buggy because toddler is walking and baby in sling but honestly it was such a lifesaver sometimes. Once baby is a bit older and on the move, it can be handy at playgroups etc to strap one in while I chased the other. Otherwise by the time one was ready to go the other has disappeared again 😂.

mountain buggy duet. Didn’t find a door I couldn’t fit it through. Did buy the newborn carrycot bit for first few months

BluIsTheColour · 17/01/2023 12:34

My daughter was a bit older at 2 1/2. I didn't get a double buggy. It would have at times been useful though. I don't do a lot of walking though I drive mostly.

I think with your child just being turned 2 it would def be a good investment.

Leostratts · 07/02/2023 17:17

Similar situation, baby 2 is due in May and child 1 turns 2 years old in April. I have bought an Out n About nipper double pram with a newborn cocoon to go one side. I plan on walking a lot this time, to and from nursery and also on the days I am alone with them both don’t fancy trying to contain a toddler while pushing a single pram!
