Has anyone ever replaced a child's doll or teddy with an identical one?

And if so, did you tell them or let them think it was the same one? And did they guess?

We've replaced a doll that got lost - was special present from Granny. DD only has 2 dolls, so it seemed a bit mean not to. Am pondering how to approach it.

Our ds1 has been through about 25 of the same teddies. Currently have 3 on rotation. They are only cheap Ikea bears though and don't survive being a constant companion / chew thing very well. I chuck them when the stuffing is falling out. Have also had a colour change (when ds1 was 18 months). Teddy was rejected for a few hours and then we hit bedtime and I suppose he discovered he tasted the same in the dark.

RubberDuck · 05/02/2008 15:02

Yes, my ds2 regularly has replacement Cuski's but then he always knew he had several that were rotated when they needed washing, so it wasn't too much of a shock.

I was annoyed though when they changed the design so it had TWO labels instead of ONE, though. Fortunately, the fall out was only totally miserable for about 24hrs...

BabiesEverywhere · 05/02/2008 15:15

Ruberduck, DD was given a couple of Cuski's by TF and I loved them and how easy to replace, wash etc. I really wanted them to be the toy of choice but of course she loves the flipping disney toy

Lol, always the way...

BE did you know that dd got her original cuskies from RubberDuck ? One of them was lost but was replaced and I was so very pleased that we had another in the meantime (although there was a minor panic when we thought the spare had been left at nursery and of course it was the weekend). She has always known that she has more than one and is happy enough when one of them goes for a bath.

They have two labels now? Arse.

DD has lost her current second favourite. It was a lion beanie that cost £1 from Asda that she won in the pass the parcel at the nursery Christmas party. Of course if she hadn't lost it, it would now be gathering dust along with the rest of the non-cuskis but she keeps remembering she has lost it and being sad about it . Of course you can't buy the frigging things any more.

BabiesEverywhere · 05/02/2008 17:43

Well, I have two unloved original cuskies here if you need them, though I am hoping to push them on baby bea in August

BabiesEverywhere · 05/02/2008 17:44

Are you still at work TF !!!

cherryredretrochick · 05/02/2008 18:19

My dd had a pink dolly, we bought a new one from america old one had atually fallen tp pieces(couldnb't get it her so no idea where it came from in the first place). DD went to nursery and when I went to pick her up I told her I had washed it. All the staff commented on how good mummies washing machine was, never noticed.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 05/02/2008 18:20

LOL @ Mummy's wonderful washing machine!

Tis very good please don't tell on me.

SnappyLaGore · 05/02/2008 18:26

had this recently

ds1 has 'dirty duncan' (a duck. who is dirty. DD does not like to be washed apparently)
ds1 always sleeps with dirty.
ds3 took dirty to the park to feed the (real) ducks. and lost him.

i, cunningly i thought, tracked down thru ebay and boufght 2 backup dirtys when he first got attached. they are known as clean duncan's.

fed ds1 a line about accidentally washing dirty... but he didnt really beleive it. next day, went back to park and FOUND dirty. big phew.

think dp and i were possibly more disturbed by loss of dirty than ds1

MrsDandOllie · 05/02/2008 18:39

We've got 2 'Ellies'. Always have 2 of them! They are a blanket with an elephants head on and gets chewed constantly so needs washing every couple of days. DS is 2 and doesnt know the difference!

SnappyLaGore · 05/02/2008 18:42

washing every couple of days? whoa.

dirty has been washed maybe 3 times. when he gets soaked in urine or vomit lol.

hes not called dirty for nuffin

he likes his smell. its part of it.

MrsDandOllie · 05/02/2008 19:22

Oh but Ellie doesnt just smell, he STINKS lol
and if you had my DS in your bed at night with stinky Ellie between you, pressed up against your face then you'd wash him every couple of days too

Othersideofthechannel · 05/02/2008 19:23

Like Diplodocus only it's a mouse in this house

Indith, are you French? Just wondering why you used the term doudou?

bran · 05/02/2008 19:32

Ooh Snappy, we have a clean Curly and a dirty Curly. I bought the second one in case the first one got lost, but foolishly let ds catch sight of the new one so then he had to have them both. That was ages ago and I recently asked ds which one was dirty Curly and which one was clean Curly and he couldn't tell the difference.

A handy hint if you are intending to swap a new version with an old one is to do it when they have a heavy cold. Smell is very important to small children, it was about a month before ds stopped saying the clean Curly smelt 'wrong'.

Indith · 05/02/2008 20:39

Half Otherside

Don't use nearly as much French with ds as I should but doudou comes from Nature et Decouverte so has to be called doudou obviously

Yes - tigger DS1's favorite bestest ever toy never slept without it kind of thing went missing - we searched high and low and after a week of melt down he started to like his blue giraffe called Wilson.

However, 6 months later Dh saw tigger in the Disney store, exactly the same size and style.
Bought him home, DS1 went to bed, Tigger gets into bed with DS1 in the middle of the night and we wait.

Next morning DS1 comes in joyous telling us that tigger is back - he has been on holiday to Greece but he is back now. He hasn't left his side since. (and he didn't notice the change)

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/02/2008 20:58

Yes, ds2 was attached to a teddy that had gone really manky and his fur all flat. It was from Marks and Spencer so I just kept looking on ebay for months till I spotted one the same. When it arrived I washed it with manky teddy everytime manky teddy needed washing. Offered it to him a couple of times but he knew the difference. About the 5th washing he will take whichever teddy we offer him, so while both teddies are getting worn, they won't wear out as quick ifswim.
This way we can take bear out with us if we are staying anywhere and won't have to panic if we ever leave it anywhere!
Occasionally though he has been spotted with both of them if I don't put the 'spare' away quick enough!

theangelshavethephonebox · 05/02/2008 21:00

Yes, we have three teddies on rotation. Up until recently ds (20 months) thought there was just the one, but the other week he was playing in my room, holding one teddy, and he opened a drawer and there was another teddy...the look of confusion on his face was hilarious. I think it sort of disturbed him though because didn't try and take the second one and he hasn't gone back to open that drawer again.

Catkin08 · 05/02/2008 21:09

DS (8 months) has 'clothies' which are actually reusable wipes in the softest fabric on one side and a cotton duck print on the other. He always has one to go to sleep but luckily we have about 20 and he can't tell the difference

As a child (and even now ) I always had the same stuffed toy. He came everywhere with me and was obviously very worn. My cousin who I spent a lot of time with had an original andrex puppy who got a 'new coat' every Christmas. I was always upset that my toy didn't get a new coat too but remember being pretty pleased in retrospect the day that my cousin discovered 10 of her old puppies at the back of her mum's wardrobe!!

swedishmum · 05/02/2008 21:14

Dd2's Jeremy Fisher irreplaceable frog fell unnoticed from the buggy in Stockholm one day while sightseeing - quick trip to biggest department store, closely followed by me handing over credit card for very overpriced item then asking assistant for scissors so I could deface said frog so it looked like old one. It worked though she now knows the story. Trust big dd not to keep a secret! She's 12 now and no longer traumatised.

Chuffinnora · 05/02/2008 21:19

DD lost her beanie baby cat in Tesco a few months ago. We found a replacement on eBay and let Santa bring him with all her other presents. Now dd(6) has new found faith in Santa because only someone with Xmas magic could have found Puss!

bunnyhunny · 05/02/2008 21:26

omg! so favourite toys really can get lost! I thought it was just a wicked rumour

ds is 1, and has recently attached himself to a monkey, who he uses to get to sleep for naps and at night-time. As we are going away next month, I had a panic about losing monkey, so went to get a spare one. Only they have changed the design!!

After checking ebay daily for a few weeks, I saw another identical monkey, and paid the whopping £25 for it (the original was only £6). I opened the parcel infront of ds, who was delighted to see monkey all tucked up in bubble wrap. his thumb went in his mouth and I gave it to him to sleep with that night.

We call him fake monkey.
