Understanding and speech delay

My ds is 26 months and has no words yet other than 'no' and 'gone'. It's really hard to know what/how much he understands as he doesn't talk. Nursery says he has a simple understanding and he does follow simple instructions. What was your child's understanding like if they had/have a speech delay? Do they go hand in hand?

My son has significant s+l needs (has a echp). His understanding has always been very good and he's above average for his age group etc. so having a speech delay doesn't mean they have learning difficulties but can obviously hinder them.

Does your child's nursery have any concerns about his speech or his understanding? Have they recommended any support or outside agencies? Have you spoken to your health visitor? Also the first thing they'll ask you to do is get his hearing checked.

The two don't always go hand in hand but sometimes a speech delay can be a symptom of something else (which is why they ask about understanding etc).

So this was my child at the same age.
Concerns were raised at his 2 year check by HV and myself, he later started nursery who agreed with us.
Referred for hearing test, clear. Referred to SALT who have been amazing.
We have been referred for an autism assessment which we are yet to have. But, there are other other concerns than a speech delay.

Has nursery said what the next steps are? Are they willing to refer?
I would also reach out to your HV.

Understanding, if you asked him to get his shoes would he know what you mean?

SALT- they went out to nursery to work with him and also at home, they advised nursery what to do there and his speech has come on great.

My son has an expressive speech delay but not a receptive delay. Meaning he was unable to say the words but he knew what they meant. For example if I said "shoes" he would go and get his shoes but he wasn't able to say the word shoes.

Similar to another poster I raised my concerns at the 2 year check with the health visitor. This referred us for a hearing test and speech therapy assessment. His nursery were useless with his speech delay and did nothing to help support us. So I moved him to a nursery who specialise in speech intervention and noticed a huge difference in the support he gets.

I have found my son has made the most progress by me working with him at home. Speech therapy is very infrequent where we are and usually a different person each time. He is also more relaxed at home and able to give different games and speech sounds a try without being shy.

I would recommend taking a look at Pippin the speech delay app. We are currently on week 7 of the speech course and already seen progress with his speech!

My son had an expressive speech delay and was seen by SALT and diagnosed with a moderate/severe delay. He improved massively over time and with some speech therapy. Interestingly I had also needed speech therapy as a small child.
My daughter who is 26 months is talking in sentences. Just 2 very different kids but with the same family input.
