like fleece but not fleece, for babies with sensitive skin?? does it exist?

Does anyone know of something that keeps the moisture away like fleece but isn't fleece? I use fleece liners during the day for my 10mo little boy and Minki pockets at night and like how dry his skin is by morning. But when I tried fleece liners on my now 2yo little girl, her bottom got very red (not rash as such, just very red).

At the moment tho, she's often waking up at about 4am with a very wet nappy, and I think the wetness might be waking her up. I'd been thinking to try her in a Minki at night in the hope it would keep the damp away from her skin. So I did a trial of her in a fleece nappy this afternoon and she got very red! So guess that idea won't work.

So, anyone else with a fleece sensitive baby who has found a good alternative?

Bourette silk liner? Not really stay-dry but doesn't seem to bother them too much and very healing. Just a pain as you're supposed to hand wash... Or a different type of fleece? Like a nature babies fleece liner from kittykins?

suedcloth

BigBadMouse · 05/02/2008 12:49

I second suedecloth as an alternative. It's really good. Only seen it on GAD nappies though but I'm sure if you hunt around you'd find some (they probably sell it in fabric shops but I wouldn't spot it myself unless it had a huge label on it saying 'YooHoo! over here, I am a piece of suedecloth' - errr fabric identification not my thing it seems, thankfully my local fabric shop people are used to me ).

Could you use a fleece liner under a silk or paper liner and see if that works without causing the redness?

Nappyzone · 05/02/2008 13:27

bumgenius and drybees are lined with it but never seen it by the metre iyswim....

BBM i have been looking at stocking gads lately - which ones do you have and what do you think?

Thanks for all the helpful tips! I've never heard of suedecloth - must look into it!

I've never tried the ME stay dry nappies or liners - what are they made from?

And what are GADs? Expect I've heard of them, but can't think of what it stands for just now!

Just realised that Minki Waffles are lined with suedecloth, so now I'll have to try and find someone selling one so I can try it out! I like Minki pockets, so I'm sure the Waffle will be good too. Anyone tried them?

There was something I think called Coolmax which the woman who kept a cloth nappy review blog used with great success

BigBadMouse · 05/02/2008 16:47

Nappyzone - Are you really thinking of stocking GADs???? . That would be great as I have never seen them for sale over here (despite much looking about a year ago). I bought mine second hand on eBay and as it turned out they came from the woman who makes pocket bots (which are very, very similar!) as she was a big fan of them too.

The ones I had were the bog standard GADs with pul and suedecloth but I know she makes GADanimals etc now too. I never had a leak with them despite them being well used and found the fit really good on my tall skinny monster. The PUL felt nice too and the suedecloth was very effective I thought. I sold all but one a little while ago and the person I sold them on to loved them too (wish I hadn't sold them now but DH said 'No more children' then......he buckled ).

That said, Pocket Bots are a good UK alternative now and I think if they are very similar I guess it's possible you might have problems selling the normal GADs here with the Pocket Bot competition . GADs do have a huge following in the USA though and I haven't seen anything too similar to GADanimals over here so that might be the way forward. Also I guess GAD have a good name in the UK for their inserts too so that might help sales of their nappies

hth but I suspect it is mainly rambling waffle (as per usual from me)

Rachelinscotland these are GADs - Green Acre Designs nappies - most people over here only know of the inserts for their pocket nappies which are really good.

Nappyzone · 05/02/2008 19:26

I was looking at the hairy GADanimals as i agree with pocket bot looking theory and i stock plenty of plain ones - i want to stock something hairy and cuddly that dont cost the earth like blueberries even though im addicted to blueberries and have a dalmation spot coming tomorrow with my fuzzi order

BigBadMouse · 05/02/2008 20:42

Well I reckon if they are as good as their usual GADs then they'll fly off the shelves. Let me know if you get any in so I can practice my new found nappy purchase resisting techniques

Nappyzone · 05/02/2008 20:46

resisting???? i am rubbish at resisting

lailasmum · 05/02/2008 20:51

suedecloth is still polyester so it depends what is causing the reaction. I have know normal-fleece sensitive babies to be ok with suedecloth and some not. Also micro fleece is quite a different texture to normal fleece so may be worth a go. Then there are totally smooth polyester liners like the popolini stay dry liners which have no pile. Also fleece does vary a bit some of it has polyamide in it and some doesn't not sure of the relative value of having it or not having it but fabrics that are polyamide free do seem to be promoted as being so, its possible its a know allergen or something.

fizzbuzz · 05/02/2008 20:59

Polyamide makes things last longer/be stronger, that's why it's used.

Coolmax wicks moisture away from body.

Silk is the most anti allergan fibre there is!

I teach A level Textiles, and know my fibres inside out!!!

If she is allergic to anything stick to 100% natural fibres, eg cotton, or silk. Don't know anything about nappy liners though.....

lailasmum · 05/02/2008 21:11

sometimes its the texture with nappy liners that can cause the redness, some times not. some fleece is a bit sort of bumpy, where as some is dead smooth. So some is a bit more abrasive and then there is wierd stuff like malden mills fleece that is sort of spongey.

BigBadMouse · 05/02/2008 21:38

fizzbuzz I could do with you accompanying me on my next trip to the fabric shop - I am totally clueless - esp when faced with wall to wall fabrics. I have seen Coolmax on baby mattresses though (although I'm not sure which bit is the coolmax )

thebluefoxategreensocks · 05/02/2008 21:44

hmm, such confusion with different kinds of fleece! lol All I know for sure is, the fleece in Fuzzibunz and Minki pocket nappies makes her bottom red! Haven't experimented further with other kinds of fleece. Usually I just have her in paper/flushable liners over ordinary terry nappies.

lailasmum · 06/02/2008 17:56

think fuzzi bunz is malden mills micro fleece, minki seems to vary a lot. may just be worth trying suedecloth or some of the popolini stay dry liners.
